4 devices all in one RAID 0 configuration possible on Promise Tx2?

Title says it all, if one wanted to put 4 harddrives in a single RAID 0 config on a Promise Tx2 RAID card, is this possible? (just for a large amount of swap space, security not neccesary)

Good question. I'm not sure of the definitely correct answer, but I'll take a shot at it.

Possible? Yes. Work well? No. I think your I/O transfer rates would be slower than on a 2-drive raid0 array, which is what I run on my Abit KT7R mobo. Your card DOES support 0+1, correct? Hmm, now you've got me thinking. OK. For Raid 0+1, you need four drives, which means the card was designed to be able to handle 4 drives....but in a 0+1 config. I dunno.

I'd like to say "try it, benchmark it and report back." But that's easy for me to say. ;)

OK, my reply is useless. Sorry. Here's a bump for you.

From what I read on Promise.com, you will need the TX4 to stripe (4) HDD's.

I think you will have to use the tx4. The tx2 only supports 2 HDDs.

OK, you're getting more replies...that's good. I'd like to know the definite answer myself, as I'm kind of a raid-newbie. Been using it for about 9 months or so, but I mostly know "what I need to know for my setup.", if that makes sense....

Where's that NelsonMuntz guy? He helped me out w/my setup...

I'm running an Iwill SideRAID 100 card. It has two channels and I'm running 4 WD 100GB HDDs on it. The performance is a little bit better than the 2 45GB IBM HDDs in my old box.

When in doubt, read the freakin' manual

This took me all of 1 minute to find.

"The FastTrak100 TX2 offers two independent data channels to support a
maximum of four Ultra ATA drives -- though Promise recommends using just one drive
per channel for maximum performance."

Amused, I read that too, hence my post above. However it states you will need the TX4 to strip all four drives. However, I could be wrong.

For workstations, stripe up to four Ultra ATA/100 drives (TX4) or two drives (TX2 and LP) to multiply sustained data transfer speed, particularly for large files.

Yes, but you can stripe four without it increasing the speed from two. Read page 80.

I see what you are referring too, but the manual is for the TX2, TX4, and LP.

On page 12 it makes no distinction between the products.

"Creating an Array for Performance
NOTE: FastTrak100 allows users to create striped arrays with 1, 2, 3, or 4 drives.
To create an array for best performance, follow these steps:..."

I'm tellin' ya, it works.

I am not saying you are wrong, but unless you have done so first hand there is still doubt.

Well gentlemen, I've decided to try it out. I've picked up 4 maxtor 5400 RPM 60 GB drives, and am going to give it a whirl. Obviously I don't have performance in mind (since I'm using IDE and 5400 RPM drives) I just want 1 giant logical drive for large amounts of swap space. I read the manual before posting, and was confused in the issue, that's why I posted. The points that John and Amused brought up seemed to contradict, and that's exactly what I got out of the manual. So, I will be sure to report back after my attempt and let you all know how the situation goes.

Curious... The manual also says 3 devices are supported in raid 0, and if that's the case, you'd have to be able to do 2 per channel. Just a thought...

If you're not interested in performance, doesn't Promise allow JBOD spanning? I just checked, and it does. Spanning, instead of striping, just puts your disks together end to end, meaning if your array fails, you can still get your data back. You might want to think about it. :)

I return with good news for the masses: it is fully functional under 4 device RAID-0!

(and the people rejoice)

As for JBOD, that sounds interesting, I wish you would have told me that before. lol I already striped them and have been moving data to them. Oh well, I guess that I can give it a try. Thanks again for all the info guys!

Glad it worked out. If only the manual could be a little more precise. :)

be sure to backup regularly with 4 drives in RAID 0, although Im sure you know this. :)
