Compared to my single platter 500gb drive, this thing sounds like a cd drive spinning up and down.

Is it normal? Does the multi platters make them louder? Or maybe I should exchange mine while still within the 30 day period.

I can't hear my blacks over other system noise (video card fan..etc).
Make a recording of the noise. :)

more platters can make them louder as can different bearings in the motor
maybe it has a bit of a vibration that is resonating through the case's hdd mount? suspending a hdd in some cases can make a big difference

is your old hdd a low rpm model?

wd black are known to be louder but mostly due to there head movement chattering away at a higher speed when reading\writing to improve there access times

in the system i just build the two 5tb 7200rpm toshiba hdd are the loudest part with the i5 4590 stock hsf coming next
there clearly audible despite being in a nanoxia deep silence 2 with rubber mounts and sound deadening

hard to tell from the recording but
the intermittent noise is head movement which should stop once your hdd is no longer reading\writing but the actual spin noise sounds fairly normal

getting a ssd to install the os to will make the system much quicker and you will get far less head movement from the hdd if its just used for storage
the case does seem to be making it louder so a better case would also help

or you can try suspending the hdd and maybe add some sound deadening to the case panels

I had 1T black that had a 3D background whine and could not track it down to the inactive drive , being a back up drive it had no head chatter.
but I did not think/find it only after replacing any thing that moved in my system.
over 3 months last winter
-switched out power suppy [2 rma's for coil whine]
-replaced old fans with lower rpm fans
-moved 2nd pump downstairs

-installed a 140 noc under the psu fan to cool it down so fan would not turn on @25c [seasonic 1050] and to take some load off the psu installed a 2nd psu 550w [12v from system switches unit on via relay]downstairs for pumps[2] and rad fans[9] , ran 12v from that unit to the fan controllers in the system.

when one day when the system started to hum I had the side panel off I unplug the black turned on system no hum ,plugged it back in could hear the hum/background whine .
ripped the drive out went to store and picked up a 750gb evo lol
no more spinners for me.[I have system drives set not to spin down but I think win7 did it for all drives]
but after all that work and money ,I did end up with a 100% quiet system even at 100% full load.
