A third-grader stuck 19 schoolmates with her mother's diabetes blood-testing needle this week, and one pricked student tested positive for HIV on a preliminary test, officials said.

Health officials said the virus could not have been contracted from the needle stick, and they noted that preliminary tests can yield false positives.

The risk to students who were stuck after the possibly infected child depends on factors including the depth of the stick, health officials said.

The 8-year-old stuck her Taylor Elementary schoolmates Wednesday at the school's breakfast, at lunch and in the classroom, using a needle that was about one-third of an inch long, on the end of a device that looks like a pen, school officials said. They were unsure why the girl did it.

She was suspended and will probably be moved to another school, said Paul Vallas, the school district's chief executive.

Most of the students involved were taken to a hospital for testing and treatment, school officials said.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the risk of HIV infection after a needle stick is low, with an average of one in 300 cases leading to infection.

I am sure the parents and administration of the new school are thrilled with prospect.

"Health officials said the virus could not have been contracted from the needle stick, and they noted that preliminary tests can yield false positives."

How the hell can they say that? They say that IV drug users routinely get HIV from sharing needles, yet when something like this happens they say that you can't get it.

I think they're lying in an attempt to prevent public hysteria.

Why the face? If someone gives you a death sentence, are you supposed to just sit there and do nothing?

Maybe the kid already had HIV?

How the hell did this little satan prick 19 kids before being stopped? I mean, wtf, did the kids not realize it, or just not tell, or what? Sense made = none.

It takes 2 weeks for HIV to be detectable after you are exposed (that is the time needed for HIV to infect you and start spreading). Thus, a true positive result now means the child was previously HIV positive.

On a related topic: the average person needs to be exposed 11 times to HIV before getting infected. HIV is acually quite difficult to transfer from a person to another person (compared to other diseases).

Just poking someone with a needle and sticking it into a vein to draw blood and insert drugs are two entirely different things. Thats why they said that. Reading is your friend.

No!

But Smokey the Bear says that only YOU, Skoorb, may prevent forest fires. Tough burden, isn't it. We are all counting on you.

The health officials are just trying to curb panic. It is possible, but highly improbable. the use of IV needles is much greater because it is intra-venous. this is a little prick on the finger. there is a very low probability that the needle picked up any virus, and a very low probability that depth of contact would cause infection.

still possible, just not probable. if it was entirely impossible, they wouldn't be testing all of the kids ;)

There's a difference between being pricked by a needle, and sharing needles with drug users.

Also, am I the only one that noticed that nowhere did it say that the offending child or her mom had HIV?

So...which is it? You have to love articles that flat-out contradict themselves in this manner. Was the editor in the back room getting a nooner whilst the peons were publishing stories?

well she wasn't injecting them with anything so maybe that had something to do with it.

Exactly, or the test was a false positive.

I see the hysteria surrounding HIV still exists, even in this day and age.

I answered that question above. Yes you can contract it from the needle stick (although it is rare). However, it cannot be detected immediately (unless by extremely rare coincidence the tester happened to find the one virion in the whole body, and in which case by luckilly removing the viron for testing you are probably no longer infected). Thus a true positive now means the child did not contract HIV from the needle stick but instead had HIV previously.
