3rd Gen Mazda MX-5

Shawn

I think it looks pretty cool. Doesn't mean this is exactly what it's going to look like but I think it's pretty close considering the spy pics look very similar.

spy pic 3

edit: Anyone out there read japanese? It looks like there will be 2 versions. A 1.8L with 200hp and a 2.0L with 230.

Pics 1 & 2 look very nice. Basically a RX-8 roadster, correct? I would assume they would use the 2.3L turbo that's going in the Mazdaspeed 6. Is this going to be RWD or FWD?

It's a miata, so RWD.

No - this is the next gen miata.

Ohhhhh. I thought this was a bigger platform than the Miata. Are there any plans for a topless RX-8?

A little optimistic on the numbers perhaps? 😕

The 1.8L makes 143HP and 127lb-ft. 2L makes 178HP and 141lb-ft - if my math was correct.

why's that? the 2.0L S2000 made 240hp.

Because the S2000 is a very high revving engine. HP=RPM*TORQUE
High revving engines are harder and more expensive to build. I am guessing at 25K pricepoint, they aren't going to make it that high revving.

still, the first gen 1.8L miata put out 128hp, yet the second gen got 143hp out of 1.8Ls.

no the box in lower left hand says:

1.8L- 145hp@6800
2.0L- 180hp@6500

the 200 and 230 are prices. 200 (ten thousand) yen and 230(ten thousand) yen

and btw i don't think it's official. it says somewhat "predicted"

oh i'm chinese. it's just quite a few japanese characters are also chinese

*edit: it also says that the frame will be also somewhat similar to the RX-8

Sure, with an F1 derived engine revving beyond 9 grand. Using something like that in a mx-5 would likely price it out of the entry-level roadster market in which it competes. Not saying it can't happen, but I think it'd be better left to a mazdaspeed version if anything. The base versions need to remain affordable to be competitive in their market segment.

Anyway the numbers are right there in the lower left corner of your second link. 145ps@6800rpm for the 1.8L and 180ps@6500rpm for the 2L.

Oh well, one could hope. The S2000 is NA btw.

No - this is the next gen miata.

actually i read in car and driver that the miata will in fact be based on a scaled-down version of the RX-8 chassis.

that will be fun with the 2 litre.

the mazdaspeed 2.3 would probabyl be overkill, and there might be some issues mounting that engine in a RWD car with a very short engine bay.

As long as it's FUN, reliable, and reasonably priced, there's no reason it shouldn't sell as well as the previous generations.

pretty sexy imo

too bad we won't see a mazdaspeed version till its last year of production but the 2.0 seems to be just perfect
