Housemate's car has a lot of chips on the hood/bumper. Wouldn't mind preventing that.

Is this a good idea? Pros/cons? Local place says they charge $500 - is that good or bad?

What about brands? When I think tape, I think 3M, but are there other similar products that are superior?

$500 sounds about right for a front end application. No real cons as the film had improved over the years. In the early days it yellowed over time but now that's a non issue. If you generally care for the paint well it's worthwhile. Otherwise I'd say it's a waste of money.

I've had Xpel Ultimate on three cars and it's always held up and not yellowed. Even has light self-healing attributes so you don't get swirls or scratches. Also like that you can be a little more abrasive with bug removal and not fear of ruining your clear coat.
