3GBs of memory in the 9400/E1705/M1710

If I have 1x1GB, and 1x2GB in there, will it still run dual-channel as long as all the timings area the same? Can anyone with an E1705, 9400, or XPS M1710 confirm?

Dual channel only works with sticks of the same capacity, I've never heard of it working any other way. Although, theoretically, AMD's Barcelona procs may be able to do what you describe, since they use two 64 bit memory controllers instead of one 128 bit controller. But anyway, that's irrelevant for now.

Actually, unless you have an AMD laptop, dual channel is entirely meaningless (except for the IGP, since it's on the northbridge itself) since the FSB is almost saturated with a single channel of memory.

Yes. The first 1GB on each stick will run in Dual-Channel. It's called assymetric dual channel; I have it running like that on my own laptop (1 512MB stick and 1 2GB stick). Either way, the dual-channel in a laptop makes no difference as it uses a 64-bit memory controller instead of the 128-bit controller found in desktops.
