3GB Ram in Dual-Channel Mode

Hi all, I am wanting to upgrade to 3GB memory from the 2GB RAM I already have. I?m running Windows Vista, and have an Asus P5B Deluxe Motherboard. The current RAM I have is 2 x 1GB DDR-800 modules, running in dual-channel mode. Here's a link to the specs of the current RAM I have.

The motherboard has 4 memory slots, so I thought if I place 2 x 512mb RAM modules into slots 2 & 4, it should all run at dual channel? Here's a link to the 512mb RAM modules I want to purchase.

Am I likely to run into any problems with this different brand of RAM? I cannot find G.Skill 512mb RAM modules that run at DDR-800 at CL4 timings in New Zealand. I?m also not skilled up with Overclocking, so am happy to have all memory running at stock speeds. Many thanks for any replies 🙂

Your motherboard has the P965 chipset so you should be able to add another 1 gig stick and still be able to run in Dual Channel due to the "Intel® Flex Memory Technology". link You are not limited to pairs of RAM.

I've had good luck mixing G.Skill and Corsair for 3GB using the P965 chipset(DS3). There is really no guarantee that it will work but the flexibility of the Intel P965 chipset makes it more likely for odd combos to work.

Thanks Conky. It seems that the 2 x 512mb modules are almost certainly going to work - just wanted to be sure as returning memory incurs a restocking fee 😕

So I could go for a 1gb stick, but I suppose it doesn't really matter as Windows 32bit only allows up to 3gb.

Yeah, but someday the borg(umm Microsoft) will force us all to Vista at which point you will need all the RAM slots you can find, lol.

Hey, just wanted to say thanks for that link. I've been thinking about going to 3gig as well by the end of the year(score it as a Christmas gift or something). I was hoping not to lose dual-channel by adding another 1gb stick. That link was VERY useful.

Thanks again.

And HDTVNZ, good luck!

Hey all, I have purchased the 2 512mb ram sticks from the link I posted earlier, I will post here if I have any success or not getting them to run in dual channel. The ram should be shipped in 2 or 3 days.

Success! The 3gb ram is running in dual channel mode, according to CPU-Z utility. Games such as Battlefield 2 I have noticed a big improvement in performance. Many thanks for your help Conky!

Glad that info helped! 🙂

I know I had many questions on this subject myself while researching possible upgrade options.
