from the review:

" While it?s not quite at the level offered by the Cirrus Logic 4630 products such as the Santa Cruz or Creative?s Audigy 2, it?s more than good enough to satisfy the majority of casual listeners. "

That's eerie. I was just doing a Google search for information about the nForce2 APU and how it relates to dedicated PCI sound cards, and I turned to AnandTech to see if anything had been posted here.

Great article. All the information I needed, answered about 98% of the questions I had. Thanks for the link, GT.

Thank Mark@3Dss! Their forums over there are also better for such questions. You should check them out.

I have a lot of respect for 3DSS, and I think they are the best source for audio reviews on the web, but I think that comment is rather peculiar as it doesn't appear the reviewer has even used an Audigy 2. If you read the review you notice that every gaming benchmark and quality comparison is to the original Audigy, and any reference to the Audigy 2, is only to regurgitate that it has some feature listed on a stat sheet. There is no Audigy 2 review on their site either. Yet out of the blue, they make the above comment in the conclusion without any information to back up the claim. That said, the second half of the comment can be attributed to almost any soundcard. The casual listener doesn't have top notch speakers that can really differentiate between higher end sound cards, nor do they particularly care about the quality of the audio so long as it doesn't sound terrible.

Well of course I thank him. That was one of the best-written reviews I've read in a long time. You, however, pointed me in the right direction, so I thank you as well. :D

What's that supposed to mean? You can't compare a product to another one throughout an article, then at the end draw conclusions to a completely different product. If THG tried to pull that stunt, this board would be tearing him to shreads like they do in practically every thread here about his site. The Audigy 2 has a much better Crystal DAC (Cirrus Logic CS4832,8-channel 24bit 192kHz) vs the Audigy's Philips DAC (UDA1328T, 6-channel 24bit/96kHz) along with better gaming features among other things. I have yet to see a negative review for the Audigy 2 either, with even previously anti-Creative reviewers raving about it.

If all you're looking for is a card for a casual user, almost any card would do, and I would prefer to spend $30 on a Hercules Muse or something like that which won't require me to buy a motherboard with onboard sound every time I want to upgrade.

It's about fargin time they reviewed Nforce sound. For too long NForce had been dismissed as unworthy to be reviewed on their message board, because it was Onboard.
