3DMark06 Disappointment with New System

See my sig for my new system's specs. I put it all together yesterday, installed XP with all updates, installed latest nVidia video driver and Creative sound driver, installed motherboard utilities, and installed 3DMark06. I started up the test and went to bed. In the morning, I saw that I got a score of 8422. My officemate said he got over 10K without OC-ing, and he has basically the same exact system except he has a Zalman cpu cooler and a bigger case. I haven't tried updating the motherboard BIOS/firmware yet. Is that important? With the Artic Cooling cpu fan, the cpu temp is at 39 C. The system temp is 33 C, and the GPU is 55 C. I have four 80mm case fans (1 in front blowing in, 1 on side blowing out, 2 on back blowing out) in a server size Antec case. I'm guessing there's some setting on the motherboard that I need to change. Any ideas?

Your video cards probably aren't getting enough power to put out properly. One way to notice if your video card isn't getting enough power is while you're playing a game you get random fps drops. Probably what is happening here. I'd switch to something a little beefier like the Corsair HX620W. Try to OC the E6600 too! Pushing the FSB to reach clock speeds of 3.2 ought to do it because your temps are fine now and you won't have to worry as being cpu limited. The only reason your case should be upgraded is if you're tired of 80mm fans.. my last case had 80mm and it sounded like a jet turbine engine.

It doesn't hurt to update the bios! But to get the scores you should be getting that 535W Enermax can't handle 2 8800GTXs like the Corsair HX620W could.

edit read the SLI in the title as if you alreayd had set up SLI 8800GTXs. If you were going single card though you could of saved a lot on the motherboard. So perhaps it isn't a PSU problem, you could still try it though if you have a friend.

It's just one 8800GTX. I got the SLI board in case I want to get another one when the price goes down. I'm going to update the mobo and video card bios when I get home. Hopefully, that will help. Before I OC anything, I want to see what I can get out of the stock settings.

I'd try this to fix the 3dMark06 blues.

Load up your favorite game and play it.
There could be a whole bunch of reasons for that score including your office coworker being full of shite.

I'd test it out in games. If it doesnt perform them let the troubleshooting begin.

Yeah, don't worry about synthetic benchmark scores as far as GPUs go. My 7950GT scores below average in 05 and 06, but I perform above average in most gaming benchmarks, and that's where I really care about performance.

Your score doesn't look off, and if it is, its not by much.

I ran 3DMark06 on this system and got 8330...

E6600
2GB DDR2 667mhz
8800 GTS

That was in a Dell Precision 390 (975X chipset), and everything was at stock.

Nice system you have there. Try OCing the CPU and if it is your PSU that is not giving enough power, go with the Enermax Liberty 620W.

Do I really need to get a new PSU? If I get one, I'd get one over 800W and with four 12V rails in case I want to SLI two 8800GTX's. My current PSU only has 2.

While I agree there, the point of a synthetic test like 3DMark06 is that it is repeatable and given similar components, gives comparable results. It lets the user breath a sigh of relief - ok, this is what everyone else is getting so everything is running fine and dandy. His scores are in line with what most 8800GTSs score with a CPU like that so he has reason to be a little concerned.

And yeah, 3DMark06 scores do vary a lot with the amount of CPU power. So I'm having a hard time believing your friend got 10,000+ with an E6600 (no OC).

For instance, here's a review with Evga 680i+X6800+8800GTX+2GB Corsair DDR2-800 with ForceWare 97.02 - the result they got is 10,753

Your Enermax PSU is the one with the 34A 12V rail, right? I don't see how that would be a problem unless something was wrong with it. Although not very accurate, you might want to use Speedfan or a similar software tool to check your voltage rails while running 3DMark06 to stress your CPU.

I doubt it is your PSU. When PSUs can't supply enough current the computer crashes.

You also have a PSU plenty capable of running your current system.

Last night I got a 3DMark06 score of 8422. Tonight, I went to the eVGA site and downloaded BIOS updates for the 680i SLI and 8800GTX and a 680i SLI driver update that I hadn't previously gotten. That's ALL I did, and now I'm getting a score of 10,067. The FPS were much better too. I'll never underestimate the importance of BIOS/driver updates ever again!!!

I haven't installed photoshop yet, so this MS Paint screenshot will have to do.
