3dmark01 vs 03

So, is 3dmark03 more cpu intensive than 01? Why do people still seem to quote 01 scores vs the much more demanding 03? Does it really matter at all since there aren't any games out there that seem to tax a system as much as this benchmark of benchmarks?

3dmark01 is more affected by cpu
its also directx8.1 and supports "advanced pixel shaders"
nothing outdated there

Anything much less than an ATI 9500 or better doesn't run worth a darn in '03.

'01 is more balanced at this point in time, imho.

People still use 3dmark01 cause it's dx8 and not everyone has a dx9 card. And there's not much point of people with dx8 cards running '03, since their card can't even run all the benchmarks.

3DM03 is still GPU-bound, while 3DM01SE has been CPU-bound for a while, now. People probably quote 3DM01SE scores because they're slightly more relevant to current games than 3DM03. Or maybe they quote them because they like the bigger numbers--who knows with people who flaunt 3DM scores other than to verify their system is relatively up to speed? 😉

That just about says it all.

You can run 3DMark03 on a P3 600MHz with 9700Pro and a P4 2.8GHz with 9700Pro and get very similar scores.
03 doesn't care about the CPU for sh!t.

When I configure or reconfigure a system, I run '01, '03 if applicable and PCMark02.

If something is out of wack, I can isolate it and fix it, but usually they fall within expected parameters.

I can then keep a record of these "benchmarks" in case the system later seems slow or off its feed.

So I do find them useful for their intended purpose, not for the "game" they have become for the o/c addicts.

i'd have to go with the gpu bound theory too... when i run my 2500+ at 2800+ speeds and overclock my 9800np to 430/340, i get about 6056 in 03, but after overclocking to 2213mhz (177x12.5) my score only went up about 12 points.

Im not sure if I buy that. Im running a 2.4 with a 9800 pro, but Im only hitting about 4750 '03 marks. I've seen people topping 5k, and it aint cause they have a better vid card.

Just to prove it's more about the power of the video card, and less about the power of the CPU:

3dMark2k3 5800 Ultra

Pay close attention to the CPU, and also note that everything is stock on the test.

What are the stock speeds for the 5800 Ultra? Can't remember just know that they were higher clocked speeds than the 5900 Ultra's.

And, also, my first computer gets above 5300 every time I run the benchmark. It has been shown that 03 mainly measures GPU speed, I just don't have the link to the article.

My 9800non pro didn't run 03' worth a crap. Yes... I have AA off with DX9 . I got the same score as my TI4200, 2100.
However I get over 15k in 2001 .
