Which one do you think was better? I think the Voodoo 5 was better because of compatibility and because it used rotated grid rather than ordered grid. Also, 3dfx's colors were just better. Something about their blending looked so great.

As everyone here knows, I don't care about performance because I don't play if I can't have the best IQ features. I'm also not good at telling the difference between frame rates unless one is really choppy and the other is not choppy.

I want to say 3dfx just because their IQ was better, but I never owned a 5500. Would make for a helluva cool framed case display tho !! I owned several GF2 GTS cards and IQ was very hit or miss even when using the same CRT monitor.

Had a GeForce 256 DDR and a Voodoo5 5500. The Voodoo5 was infinitely better in IQ.

I had them both as well! The quality of the Voodoo 5500 was really impressive but, sadly, many gamers thought it was just a bit better, imho. The GeForce 2 GTS was a very balanced product and the Voodoo 5500 was more of a trust product, considering how subjective IQ may be for some.

How awesome would the market be if we have 3dfx, nvidia, amd/ati, matrox, and even S3 all competing.

I had a Voodoo5-5500 AGP and a 128MB ATI Radeon 8500. I used to swap the Radeon for the Voodoo5 because of its better IQ. I still have my Voodoo5 and I know one day it'll be worth millions!

I really wish it was a mix of those times and now. Back then, there was not a good 3D standard, and so the number of companies didn't help as much as it would today. If we had 4-5 different major players all using DX, it would be fantastic for everyone.

Back then, I didn't mind because I used Glide from the original Voodoo days all the way through Voodoo5. If it didn't support Glide, you always had OpenGL and D3D support as well.

Glide to me was a vehicle to get 3d acceleration for PC games and when OpenGL and Direct3d matured, the need for Glide wasn't as important. Have some of my fondest gaming memories on 3dfx hardware --- playing the original TombRaider and having an odd crush on Lara, or seeing the sky for the first time in the original Unreal. Memories embedded in my gaming spirit and remember how much fun it was.

Yeah...it was like a whole new experience when using Glide for the first time. The quality, fluidity, and sheer awesomeness was amazing.

Titles that blew me away with Glide:
Quake (GLQuake)
Unreal
Wing Commander Prophecy

I started gaming on Matrox products and refused to pay a premium for the original Voodoo card. Finally, resistance was futile, and the difference was tangible.

Good Lord, Wing Commander -- that brings back memories, hehe!:)

Same here...I had a Matrox and was not that pleased with it. I spent as much on my original Voodoo as my monitor, and it was worth every penny.

Without the growing and evolving, one doesn't create the great products as well. nVidia is large enough to make mistakes and learn from them. nVidia is not afraid to fail, imho. My point about "3dfx legacy" is some of the former 3dfx employees and their specific individual strengths help with nVidia's products and their gaming experience potential.

not awesome at all

even with just two primary competitors (not going to get into integrated graphics ala intel, etc) we see more than enough driver issues and software problems. I don't like to think about the number of headaches we'd see with more than 2 primary players.

Heck, PC gaming might actually be better off if we had just one GPU maker as it would allow game developers to tighten up their builds to take direct advantage of the hardware that they would know everyone has vs. programming for a common denominator across a hodgepodge of possible hardware configurations

Granted, I'm not saying it would be overall, but at least in that specific regard it would most certainly be.

I think some that deem headaches will always find ways of getting headaches no matter what.

I don't think the market could sustain that many players anyway. The smaller ones would have been bought out or been beaten out...just as what happened. The only unexpected thing about the early years of 3D acceleration was that the former leader disappeared so quickly.

Like everyone else,... nostalgic of GLquake.
However 3dfx got beaten by nvidia with their TNT cards (I think).
I only ever owned a voodoo1 and 2 card, after that it was nvidia for me.

The best of the bunch survived....
ATI got bought up by AMD and Nvidia bought up 3dfx.

Matrox used to have really good 2D cards... but that wasnt enough to keep them afloat. I dont remember if S3 ever had any lead advantage over the otherrs in same way.

3D really took off, and those that couldnt follow died off.

I think their later "Savage" card might have been well received? But I know their early ViRGE chips were some of the main ones responsible for the coining of the phrase "3D Decelerator".

I dont think anything has come close the the fluid like glass motion and look of Glide...It truly was beautiful
