3d vision is absolutely amazing

The problem with 3D in general is really not a lot of content to use it for. Who wants to watch a drama/comedy in 3D?

Hell even Avatar 3D was not exactly awe inspiring vs non 3d.

The only real motivation for 3D is in certain films made to cater to it.

The real future is not 3D anyways..its global gaming on a world level with everyone from poor people to rich people wanting in on a game with real world outcomes. A racing game that rewards people like a game show, a world war game that has outcomes on political agendas, etc.

I tried HL2 in 3D and had a real hard time aiming at things.. It looked ok but to be honest the "wow" factor left after about 15 minutes.

Zalman and iZ3d both sell a polarized 3d monitor which you can use with iZ3d drivers, Tridef DDD drivers and Cyberlink PowerDVD 3d Theater mode.

Thanks, it lost my edit a few minutes later after posting.

It was iZ3D; theirs is 22", and they say a 27" is planned in a year+.

It runs $300 at Amazon, apparently $280 using their referral setup with a $20 reward for the referrer.

So no one knows the company with the 3D monitor I mentioned?

It's iz3d.

Over the years I never was a big fan of 3d movies in theaters despite several attempts but
I've now watched Directv 3d programming channels on my on my 73" DLP display and I was like WOW...
I've already got the 3d gaming capable rig.
Still debating to get the Nvidia 3d kit < $200 so I can game in 3D.

I'm just not a big fan.

I don't want video games to become more and more real. The fact that they aren't is what makes them fun. If I actually felt like I was wetting myself in BC2 when a mortar strikes lands right next to me it would be realistic but not fun.

Playing video games is just that IMO. I don't want to play virtual reality games, and I'm just not into whatever 3D is trying to accomplish. (more realism?)

I agree. Just how amazing would 3D WoW be?

I did some test runs running WoW in 3D on my 52" 3D plasma as well as some runs simply using anaglyph (red/blue) on my 22" monitor. I used several methods, like tridef drivers, Nvidia 3d Vision, iz3d and so forth.

The problem (aside from technical problems like ghosting) is that with the 3D the game becomes more "abstract" and NOT MORE 'REALISTIC' which actually should be the purpose of 3D, right?

Let me explain:

If you play a game like WoW in 2D you are not only used to the "cartoonish" appearance of the characters, textures and so forth.

You are also used to seeing your toon (eg. if you zoom out)...and you can easily accept all this.

If you play it in 3D, weird things can happen..which i call the "doll house" effect ....

You see your toon in front of you on the screen, but through the given new dimension now you get the impression that your toon is, say, exactly 20cm high. Like a barbie doll or something.

It is in 3D, all right, but the perceived sizes of the 3D characters and other objects are STILL nowhere near "realistic" - it becomes actually less realistic since the 3D introduces some weird preceipton of size.

Its like..playing with a "doll house"....you see all the objects as they are and of course in 3D...but this doesnt make the doll house (or aquarium etc.) more "realistic" since a character perceived as 20cm big just feels you play with barbie 🙂

The fact that textures (especially with WoW) stay at the same low quality level makes it even worse...

FURTHERMORE...here is the big, big kicker:

3D is not everything. What is at least as important is a BIG FoV (Field of View) which SHOULD actually fill your whole sight in front of you- PLUS the 3D.

Otherwise it will all look like an aquarium.

I would actually go so far and say that a big FoV is more important to perceive "realism" than the actual 3D.

Imagine you have a big, big screen-wall in front of you where you can play your favorite game. The wall is at least 10-20ft wide and 10ft high. It would require very little 3D to make this the ultimate experience.

Furthermore each game would need to be in 1st person perspective...respective the perceived sizes of characters/objects must be CORRECT and not further abstract an already abstract game with wrongly perceived sizes etc..

(As for my tests with the 52" plasma: Its not a 3dvision plasma but an earlier gen "3d ready", so its not 120hz. WAY too much ghosting which is extremely distracting. All 3d technologies exhibit SOME kind of ghosting, even in IMAX. But in this case its just too extracting if you see an object and then two "ghosts" of the object left and right...depending on object color/contrast. In tests where i had the screen right in front of me, basically for filling my FoV the max. resolution of 1360x768 is simply not enough. (Add the fact that the old gen 3d ready tech basically halfes the resolution in addition. So....i dont think that anything BELOW TRUE 1920x resolution and true 120hz would yield good results. And then of course there must be as little ghosting as possible)

channels on my on my 73" DLP display and I was like WOW...
i am jealous because DLPs are supposed to have very little ghosting ;/

add:

Yes, there are several 27" 3d monitors planned to be released. VERY interested in them. I think 27" would be "about" doable and COULD give a good enough FoV if they're on my desk. But they are all 16:9 which i kind of dislike...

Isn't that what the scroll wheel on nvidia's IR transmitter is for?
