3d htpc

What does my HTPC need to have in it in order to support 3D movie watching? I know I need a 3d tv, 3d glasses, and a 3d blu-ray player. Do I need a special graphics card?

You don't need a 3D Blu-ray player for an HTPC. Any 4X or higher BD player will work.

For a graphics card you'll need either a NVIDIA 4xx or 5xx series card, or a 6xxx series AMD card. The 5XXX series can do some forms of 3D but it's limited.

Last of all you will need software that can do BD3D. PowerDVD and TotalMedia Theater both have versions that can do 3D. Not sure about WinDVD.

Any blu-ray player 4X or higher in a PC can play a BD3D with the proper graphics card and software.

Standalone players must specifically be 3D because they require the internal components and firmware to process/output a 3D signal. The actual BD-ROM in standalone 3D players are just regular BD-ROMs though.

What exactly can the AMD 6000 do over the 5000 in 3d movies?

Will most likely be getting a 69xx for my main pc, and putting my 5870 into my other pc that will then be hooked up to my 3dtv.

Straight from AMD:

AMD HD3D technology is enabled on ATI Radeon HD 5000 Series GPUs and above using Catalyst 10.10 or later, however Blu-ray 3D playback is only supported on AMD Radeon HD 6000 series GPUs and above.

Well I've had no trouble watching 3d blu-rays with TMT3 with my 5870, well at least after I figured out how to get it working.

TV doesn't detect it automatically like with my 3d blu-ray player or ps3, but it does work.

I'm using it on a Samsung PN58C7000.

Found out you must plug the hdmi cable into hdmi port 1 on the tv, then rename the input in the tv's menu to PC/DVI.

Your refresh rate must be set at 60Hz, and you will be able to access all the 3d modes the tv is capable of.

Then in TMT3, you set the 3D mode to 3D DLP for the checkerboard format, and select that mode in your tv's 3d options as well.

The 5xxx's support checkerboard and anaglyph which are both HD 3D methods but aren't considered BD3D. True BD3D requires the shutter glasses.

Hmm, well I am using the active 3d glasses for the checkerboard.

To me the 3d effect and quality in BD3D movies is excellent still in checkerboard. Not sure if my eyes have just gotten use to it, but I feel absolutely no eye strain watching them with my computer.
