Heh, that was pretty sweet. I'm not sure how much it will help someone that doesen't already know what is going on though. I guess, as long as you aren't completely mechanically clueless.

..the dual overhead cams appear to be chain driven rather then belts. I wish this was standard form. The chain would prob.last the life of the motor. The belts have a service interval of aprox.60k miles.

Agreed. I've wondered for a long time what the real cause of the move away from timing chains was.

Weight? Cost? To throw dealerships a bone? All of the above? lol

Chains still have to be replaced.

Gears will last the life of the motor.

Chains still have intervals, something like 120-150k. Belts are getting better though, I think lots of cars now have 60-120k belt change intervals.

The reason no one uses gears or chains is because of NVH. People not only desire more power, better fuel economy and less vibration but also quietness at the same time. Gears are very loud, chains are loudsih while belts are quietest.

..all that and noise. especially in luxury cars. I hear the chains will become somewhat noisy when they break in.

Chains are very popular even today - the Nissan VQ-series has used a timing chain for many years, and still does.

Pretty neat animation. So in fuel injected cars, the injectors are placed so they inject the fuel at the intake port and then when the intake port opens, the fuel flows into the cylinder? I always thought the injectors squirted fuel directly into the cylinder.

They do in diesels, and in direct-injected gas engines. That's new tech, though, and it requires low sulfur fuel.
