ever since I watched movies such as 'the lawnmower man' or 'strange days' i've been thrilled by the idea of one day experiencing virtual reality

i know we're not there yet.. but with the level of graphics games coming out this year are offering.. i'd say we're almost there.. graphically anyway

the question is.. are there any helmets or glasses out there that exist currently (or projects you know of that are in development) that allow the end user to experience today's incredibly game graphics as though he was right there in the middle of it all?

a quick google search comes up with these 3d glasses http://www.edimensional.com/

they definately seem to be the best out there.. or at least.. they have the most "publicity"

has anyone tried them with recent 2005 games.. like shooters? and what you can tell us of your experience? please be honest.. there's so much hype about the effect they create on those sites that try to sell em to you or make a comission off a potential sale.. but whats' the real deal?

and are there any others? i'm really interesting in possibly buying something like that if it helps me feel like i'm right there in the game.. especially in the upcoming Oblivion.. I want to be right THERE you know!

I found this site too.. and it's got a list of VR helmets that can be bought.. but I don't know if any of em are good or better than the edimensional ones.. but check it out if you want.. cool stuff http://vresources.org/hardware/hardware2.shtml

i used to have a set of elsa 3d glasses back when i had an elsa geforce2 card. they worked pretty good. im not sure how they would work with an lcd monitor but with a crt they cut the refresh rate in half so you need a monitor that supports very high refreshrates or you get a headache.

I saw either this product or a very similar one at CES last year -- it works, assuming you can get source material in 3D.

The problem is that to work with games or 3D apps on a computer, either the application has to be programmed to support it, or they try to interpose something at the driver level to produce the stereo output, which gives mixed results at best and can screw with some programs. Haven't tried their product myself, though.

I had a pair with my GF4 Ti 4400. It's a really cool effect, but they do halve refresh rate, so you have to really crank it, and they still make you sick after a while.

It's pretty neat though.
