3d Apps majorly crashing

Hello

Seem that ever since I got the "Refurb" x800xt pe from ati i have been getting complete crashes in 3d apps like WOW and counter strike source. I did a complete format before i installed anything. The crashes usually happen after maybe 10 minutes and it completely locks up. out of speakers comes a really loud PSSHHHHHHHHHHH PSHHHHHHHH noise. Any ideas?

In my experience, crashes like that are usually video related, but since it was a fresh install of everything, it might not be drivers... perhaps that refurbed card wasn't refurbed very well.

Another thought... is the video card's onboard fan working? Going into a 3D mode will make the card heat up a lot more since it is doing a lot more work. When at the desktop, the onboard heatskink may be enough for stable operation. Kick 'er into 3D, and now things will "heat up". Sorry, bad pun.
