3D acceleration in Virtual Machine

How is the state of 3D in virtual machines? Would like to no longer dual boot into XP if 3D accel works decent with DirectX. Considering the age of the software that would run under XP, some performance loss is acceptable.

I'm not sure if it will do what you want it to but your best bet would be to just try it out. Since it's a virtual machine it makes managing it pretty easy (and deleting it too if it doesn't work out) all the while keeping your dual boot stuff just in case it doesn't work out.

I would recommend VMWare, their 3D acceleration should be (far) better than virtual box (at least it is in linux guests, which I know means nothing). I believe they just came out with a new version which had some updates to the 3D accel stuff too.

The free player (which does have a terrible interface but should use the same engine/backend stuff as workstation) might be worth checking out.
