3com winmodem and win XP

I have a dual boot win98/xp setup. I have a USR 56k winmodem that works fine in win98 but in xp it will only connect once and then I have to reboot if I want to connect again. I use At&T dialup service. The modem dial and tries to connect but it times out when trying to verify username and password. Any help would be greately apreciated.
 
Yes I have checked that all my drivers are up to date. What I have found is that Zonealarm is what is causing the trouble. apparently Zonaalarm 2.6 is not campatible with XP. you have to upgrade to Zonealarm pro 3.0 for XP campatability.
