3COM Superstack II 1000 switch

Just got this from somebody here at Anand's for sale board. Its got 24 ports (10mbs) and one 100mbs uplink. It works fine, all ports work including the uplink port. I was curious about the management functions of this switch so I hooked up a null-modem cable to its serial port at the back. I downloaded a Telnet program and tried to connect to the switch. Instead of getting the configuration menu (as outlined in the manual),I got this weird menu for the National Library of Medicine, Bethesda Maryland! Is this some sort of custom menu programmed into the switch? How do I get rid of it?

You might try HTTP'ing into the switch using a browser. I think that one has a web engine. Hopefully it's set up for bootp or dhcp and will pick up a local address.

For Switch 1K, connecting to it via nul-modem cable is correct.
The program you need to use is a terminal emulator, such as windows terminal ( good)
or hyperterm (marginal). The default settings are 9600, 8, 1, N. Default login is
username = security, Pw = security. Make sure that the arrow keys are terminal keys, not windows keys. the maenus are text with highlights. If the password is lost, its RMA time (bummer).
The box may not have a valid ip address on it.
If it were mine, I would blow it back to factory defaults first thing, then give it an IP address if that makes sense in your setup. Telnet should look just like the console.
I know that the 1K did not come with a http interface in code rev 1.0.

The latest code should be up on 3coms web site, but I can't think of any additional features that would be of interest.

Thats what I was trying to do, set the factory defaults on it. However, I couldn't even get the to the log-in screen 🙁

Anyway, I have the weekend to play around with it, if nothing happens then I guess I will have to call 3COM tech support on Monday.

Just got into the log-in screen but the default passwords don't work. Called 3com and the lady told me that in order to get support for this switch, I need to have a service contract or purchase support at $200/hr!!! wow, support is more than the price of the switch. I guess I better be happy about it.

Here is a link for the code:

I can't seem to find the manual online. And believe it or not, the only 3com cd I have at home is too old to have a switch 1000 manual. I'll look around my desk on Monday.

Try Admin, no password. I remember that 3.0 may have supported that. Also try manager, manager
and user, user. They will not let you upgrade, but at least see what you have.

tried admin (no password). Switch gives me invalid log-on and freezes. Had to reset at the back to make it work again. I got the manual (PDF format) from the same site. I wonder if there's an internal switch/jumper that clears up the passowrds ala clear CMOS.

Exactly what do I do with those agent software?
