3Com Cable Modem $80 after $40 rebate

I too pay $120 a year for a cable modem. I haven't seen any great deals here in MA, so I decided to buy a 3Com unit from Buy.com Modem. Does anyone use or know about these modems? It will be $80 when said and done. Any feedback appreciated.

Bought a 3Com Home Connect modem (Model 3CR29220) 6/2001.

Came with a 5 year warranty (even though 3Com has ended its cable modem manufacturing).

It is a DOCSIS compatible modem.

Has worked great on ATT Broadband in Hopkinton.

As Far As I Know (AFAIK), all DOCSIS compatible modems are supposed to work with ATT Broadband (back when they were with RoadRunner (rr)):

I'd recommend taking the time and making the effort to get it in writing that the Office Connect version is 100% right on (very, very likely to be?)

I am using this modem now with my new ATT broadband internet(formerly @home). Works great. Smart bargains has it for 119.99 plus $7.00 shipping. You get the $40 mail in rebate and if you use the msn eshop promo you will get another $20 off.
 
Just make sure it works on your system before you buy it from Buy.com as there's no return policy for those closeout items that aren't broken....

Before reading your post, I couldn't understand the need to shop for a cable modem. As a RR customer, I thought the modem was included at no extra charge. Now, I'll have to call tomorrow to see if I can get a discount if I supply my own hardware. Am I on target, or am I missing something?

AT&T knocks $10 off your monthly fee if you supply your own modem.

Sandcone RR told me sorry on buying my own modem. They told me at this time they offer no discounts but plan to in the future.

I'll check with RR tomorrow to see what is in store for our area in the near future. With what Webinformer said about compatability, I'll be sure to ask. RR supplied a Toshiba modem for my service.

That is a substantial discount. It certainly makes cable a viable alternative for those on a tight budget; almost a "hot deal" by itself. I'll be sure to watch the cable modem hot deals more closely in the future.

Did you read the rebate form?

"Offer valid on purchase of specified product(s) from buy.com."
 
Sorry...looked over the rebate form again, but still didn't see that. Must be in the fine print. Ah well, would have been cool to get it for less than 50. 🙂
 
Be carefull. As was already stated, 3Com is out of the modem business, so if the cable companies ever decide to upgrade their modem firmware, you'll be out of luck. A DOCSIS 1.1 upgrade is inevitable.
