3930k overclock question

use for rendering and video editing, not sure if overclocking is a good idea, I want it to stay stable as much as it can but still want to squeeze a bit more power out of it, wondering how much overclocking is considered being stable, I'm look at 4.0 but wondering if it's really worth it since the official turbo setting can bring it to 3.8, but if going higher than 4.0, I'm really concerned about stability, what's your setting while doing the similar tasks? thanks

You might try reading the Overclocking CPU/GPU/Memory Stability Testing Guidelines.

And the Sandy Bridge Extreme Overclocking Thread (X79, 3930K, 3960X) should give you a better idea of the top end of what you can shoot for.

A good, stable overclock is virtually as reliable as stock settings for a couple of years at least. It's wise to be somewhat conservative with the over-volts if you want to stave off degradation.

In any case, you should test thoroughly and under worst case conditions (heavier than typical real-world load, higher than normal ambient temperatures) before you start really trusting the machine's stability. Otherwise you might be pretty annoyed when your supposedly stable machine blue-screens in the middle of an important render.
