3850 512, 3870 512 or 8800GT 512 for cod 4 at 1600 x 1050?

So this is my goal as cheaply as possible, to play COD 4 and nothing else at that resolution with some detail turned on and so it looks good. My current card gets killed and looks like crap. If I go 8800 I will have to wait a while as finding one for under 250 is a problem it seems. Thoughts suggested.

Grab the 2900gt for 120.00$ at Newegg. It should play Cod4 med/high settings with no aa/aff at that resolution easily.

NCIXUS has 8800GTs for cheap. EVGA in stock for $250.

Don't buy my card; see sig; their only offer was to have me send my card back while they look at it and send me a new one that is "fixed" supposedly.

Of course, in sending my card back I would lose the chance for the $20 rebate.

Come to think of it, don't even buy from NCIXUS. They sold us these cards knowing they were this loud and now have given us the only option of doing without a computer for 2 weeks to get a card back that they didn't say they have verified themselves as being fixed, and in doing so missing the $20 rebate...

So from this BFG it looks like the best choice is the 8800, which is what I figured just cannot bring myself to spending that much right now...guess I will have to sit on the bench until they become more available.

Just get a 8800gt 256 mb model. At your resolution it may be 3% slower then the 512mb version in cod4.
Heres one for 209.00$

I played through single player at 10x16 with everything on high but no AA with a x1900xt and had no problems.
Multiplayer also worked just fine on a 32 player server with everything turned to medium/medium-high.

Just wait a little while for the 9600 GT. 512MB of memory, hopefully a few bucks less than the 256MB version of the HD3850 and approximately the performance of the HD 3870.

I'd get the 3850 now and play the video game instead of the waiting game. The 8800gt 256mb is a gamble, because while in some games it's almost as fast as a 512mb 8800gt, in other games it takes a huge performance hit from memory shortage. Considering many 3850 models will OC close to 3870 clocks, and their cheaper price, I don't see any reason to wait.

Like rstrohkirch said "I played through single player at 10x16 with everything on high but no AA with a x1900xt and had no problems".

So if the only game he wants to play is cod4 at 10x16, then like I said the 120.00$
2900gt (which is faster then the x1900xt) will be more then enough.

Why suggest a card thats 100.00$ more that he don't need? So he can play at super duper max detail?

Thanks all,

What about the:

EVGA 320-P2-N811-AR GeForce 8800GTS 320MB

It is on sale now for $199 after a rebate? other wise a 2900gt with 512mb of memory is about $160 shipped.

Thanks

When is the 8800gs 384 mb version being released. Msrp is under 200$. This would be a good card for him.

That is the resolution that I play it at now. With my 1900xt it played well with no aa. The 8800gt just sits at 60 fps so it doesn't need that much of a card.

So riddle me this, I look at this graph:

http://www.gamespot.com/features/6183967/p-4.html

And in the top part it shows the 2900XT 512 besting the I presume newer 3850? and only falling behind the 8800GT by like 7fps?

Or am I reading this wrong, granted that is at a lower res than I would play but still not bad IMHO.

Also what is the difference besides GDDR3 and 4 between the 2900Pro and the XT? the Egg has the Pro for only $150

Also how much am I missing with no AA?

except the 3850 is $160 and the 2900XT is ~$350 and sucks power like a Washington politician.

I have a similar system to you. I have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Manchester 4200 @ 2640Mhz. 2GB ram. I have this card:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814131075

I can play CoD4 all maxed out (except retarded soften smoke edges) with 2xAA and 16xAF at 1920x1080 resolution. So that card in your system will undoubtedly run CoD 4 with the same settings at 1680x1050. That Powercolor is clocked a little higher than others, but most are OCable anyway so just get any Radeon 3850 512mb that suits you.

Hey thanks,

If that is the case then I might go with that apollo 3850 that is on sale, I just turned everything down on my 6800gt and my PC makes it look like Wolfenstein...total garbage. even with everything off when it gets busy my rates drop down below 30.

Out of curiosity what kind of FPS does your system get as it does sound like our configs are similar. Thanks
