3800+ X2 idling at 65 celsius (149 F)

Ok, for some reason my processor has been idling at very hot temperatures lately. It's annoying because the fan is always on at full blast. I have the stock cooling fan on it still. Could dust on the fan be causing it to run warmer than usual??

Either something's loose or you have serious dust build up. 89W X2s shouldn't idle higher than 40C even on the stock cooler. 110W chips have higher heat production but also come with a serious heatpipe cooler to compensate.

I cleaned all the dust out, there wasn't much, but I got it off all the fans, and heat sinks (gpu and cpu). now it's idling at 60. Time to buy some AS and reapply the heatsink??

have you tried to take it off and reseat the hsf. id def think about getting some thermal compound regardless though

yeah, i took off the fan when I cleaned it off and reseated it. I even hooked up an extra case fan that wasn't before due to noise concerns. I'm going to snag some AS5 later today.

Make sure you apply enough AS5 or whatever thermal paste you got. Last time I mounted my TX-2, I didn't use enough AS5. Couple weeks ago, I cleaned the heatsink of its dust and re-applied the AS5. Temps dropped by over 10C.

did a fresh reapply....it's now idling at 57 C (134 F). I don't get it. My old newcastle core would idle at 99F.....this is really pissing me off. What I don't understand is that my motherboard is still at the same temp as always (about 91 F, 33 C). So I don't think it's a fan issue, otherwise that'd be hotter than normal too.

How the airflow in your case? Maybe your HSF is just surrounded by hot air so less caloric exchange takes place.

65c is most definately to high, in fact, that's the highest your CPU should run, before it will possibly start throttling itself. I never let mine go above 60c, and that's oc-ed to 2.6ghz.

You're right, except that AMD chips don't throttle like Intel chips. Eventually, they just shut down (if the mobo is functioning properly), otherwise they fry.
