Intel is honestly doing great work, the quality of laptop experience is now drastically improving due to more fitting into TDP constraints of that platform + IGP getting decent.

For business/enterprise, they're more than fine.

It's just us 1% gamer/oc types that look at IB and now Haswell, and see very little to even look twice at.

I think it's better to benchmark a CPU that has turbo boost with turbo boost enabled since it would be unusual for a user to disable turbo boost for everyday computing, such as gaming or work and having turbo boost enabled gives us a better idea of how the CPU would normally perform. I would want to know how a CPU performs with turbo boost because I leave turbo boost enabled in my PC and stock turbo boost is not really overclocking unless you overclock the turbo boost over stock turbo frequencies.

You are both correct, but are evaluating different things.

The point of the tests that IDC was referring to was IPC, which is single threaded performance at the same clock speed. You cannot evaluate that accurately with turbo enabled because you are not ever sure what the clockspeed actually is.

For looking at overall real world performance, yes, turbo boost is relevant, and determines the net overall performance, but that was not exactly the point of the tests they were discussing.
 
Just reading through this thread really makes me want to pull the trigger on a 3770k now. I was waiting for the 4770k, but having $275-$300 access to some 3770k's right now...

Coming from an i7 920 and factoring in the 'release' and street availablilty of a 4770k in Canada.. should I just build a new system around a $300 3770k instead?

SC2, and FFXIV (streaming both to twitch) are the main uses.

What do you guys think?

Intel has claimed a core can be optimized for one order of magnitude of power difference between the lowest and highest version. So you can design a chip that can be optimized for 10w - 100w, or 15w to 150w, 5.5w to 55w, etc.

With laptops outselling a shrinking desktop market for the past few years and server rooms being constrained by having to deal with the power/heat as well it makes sense for Intel to shoot for lower thermal targets. Remember, during those years when CPU performance was ramping up dramatically power usage also climed from 20.8w of the 800MHz Pentium 3 Coppermine to 130w in the higher end Pentium Ds. That pace pretty much required continually increasing the power requirements and if it kept going your CPU really would put out as much heat these days as a small space heater.
 
If the power climb had continued a CPU per mm:
- By 2010 would have had the same heat output as a nuclear reactor
- By 2020 would have had the same heat output as the surface of the Sun

Its good Intel is slowly reducing the power consumption peak on its mainstream, but it does mean you get less performance from each release as a lot of the gains from architecture and process go into power saving and not performance improvements. Not that a focus on performance at the same power envelope would necessarily have brought us more performance but I think its a fair assumption it ought to.

Ultimately Haskell is shaping up to be a bit disappointing, but then has any CPU since Nehalem really impressed? Its all been pretty small incremental changes and Haswell is not really any different. The new ultra wide instructions will help in a few particular programs but we can't all help but notice how little we now get per new CPU when the clock speed stopped improving.

You have a month to wait. I almost did the same thing. I am also on an i7 920 3.91Ghz.. it's still potent for Unreal Tournament III online Greed/DM. June 2nd. We are already into May, then we'll have reviews. Stay strong brother and wait it out!

It may be a dud but knowing for sure is just as rewarding. I've got my eye on a 3570K & MSI GD 65 Gaming mobo combo if Haswell can't reach 5+ Ghz on air, (hoping it'll reach 5.29Ghz haha)

Ok, i gotta stop talking about 3570K's and mobos! aaaaaaaaaah!
 
Doesn't help that MicroCenter is dropping the price on the 3570K to $169.99 this weekend, and you still get the usual $40 combo discount off mobos.

There are a bunch of nicely priced open-box mobos at the local MC too 🙁

Is that a permanent price drop or just a limited weekend special? Am considering building a comp with my teen age grandson this summer when he comes home for an extended visit. That is a great price, but dont really want to start stockpiling parts yet.

$20 price drop for this weekend. The 3570K has been $189.99 for quite a while now.
 
From the standpoint of an overclocker, 7-10% more IPC may not seem like a HUGE boost, but that's not the end of the feature list for Haswell. IPC also isn't the only thing that strongly influences throughput.

The name of the game these days is power. TDP also doesn't say anything about dynamic performance during actual use.

There's quite a bit of misinformation in this thread about process and frequency.

I read the other day that intel uses a very poor 22nm process.

They claimed that Intels 22nm process didnt scale very well with voltage. 32nm voltage scaled up with performance & heat at a reasonable curve. The Intel 22nm heat goes off the scale very quickly and performance doesnt increase anywhere near the same way as 32nm. It was somthing to do with the type of process used. They said there are different processes which have shown to be far better for high mhz clocking.

This was actually discovered when they were trying to make certain A9 ARM cores run faster and a few companies hit nearly 3ghz with A9 cores where as the other process type would be limited at 1.7-1.9ghz

Intels 22nm process type is better for lower voltages at the same mhz as 32nm. But the problems come when you try and ramp up clock speed with voltage.

Link? Also, what does "poor" mean? If by poor you mean the process likely caters to the vast majority of the intended market, then I guess it's poor...

I know you were speaking specifically about overclocking, but that's a niche market. If a choice had to be made, and I'm not saying that it did, to pick between extremely high frequency and <insert any number of better reasons to go another way>, it should be obvious which one would be picked from a business point of view.

The caps blew out on my old motherboard while I was trying to reoverclock a CPU that was showing signs of degradation. A that point I had a CPU that had lost 200Mhz in 1 month and the need for a watercooled motherboard, I threw away the sunk cost and bought the best available, which was X79. Its an upgrade but not an impressive one, it can be considered twice the speed if you get it to 4.5Ghz and in addition manage to use the 6 cores in place of the previous 4, otherwise its barely more than 50% better. I prefer to upgrade once double is on offer.

Boring story but you assumed.

I'm definitely due for an upgrade. I didn't know when it would be released, but I'm glad they're coming soon because my computer is starting to misbehave. In the past, I would have diagnosed the problem part and replaced it, but I don't really have time for that anymore. Plus, I just want a new one.

Maybe, but I'm not really an enthusiast. I'm simply not willing to spend time debugging when there's a new shiny thing to buy. I'd call that being a consumer.
