3770k 4.7 GHZ @ 1.225v sound odd?

Running it on an Asrock Formula OC...

I spent a few days reading up on overclocking and tinkering, as this was my 1st time messing with it.

I followed some things other people were doing but kept getting annoyed about the do this, do the opposite of this, no one knows what this is/means/ does stuff.

I ended up just resetting my bios and starting from scratch, and only turned off spread spectrum, enabled cpu throttling and then set the ram.

I then set voltage to fixed @ 1.2v and changed the CPU to x47.

I expected a quick BSOD as 1.3v seems to be a general average I see people running at and my previous best was 1.275v.

It didnt BS and went to desktop so I ran IBT, and LinX without issue, however Prime95 crashed in a couple of mins every time.

So I jumped the voltage to 1.225v and so far managed 5 passes on IBT, LinX, and 1 hour with Prime95 and no issues. Everything reads correct in CPUID and HWmon.

But in any case the lowest reported voltage I have read about was 1.255, and I have seen...crazy people...run 4.7 @ 1.4v which seems like obvious overkill.

So is my chip just that good or am I missing something?

I should probably also mention my friend liked my system so he cloned it and is using everything the same except power supply ( Which is in the mail ) and he is using a different video card, which should have nothing to do with it...

Best he can get is 4.7 GHZ @ 1.275v using the same settings.

Run that sucker for a couple of hours in OCCT and 24 hours (if possible) in Prime95. You may have a "mostly stable" chip--or just a VERY good one.

That is really nice, excellent voltage. You got yourself a great chip!

You don't know how to oc any better than the average joe. You just got lucky.

If you read the post again, I changed very little other than the multi and the voltage.

And I dont believe I made it sound like in any way I thought I was any thing other than a novice.

I was just wondering if the chip was above average or if there was something I could do further to test it. Also I figure people might share their voltages if applicable and it might turn out this isnt as unusual as I thought.

I am still testing it of course, running OCCT right now...

I ran a ib at 47k with 1.271v for a few months only to discover I had 1200 whea errors.
I dropped it 4600 at 1.256v or I can up it to 1.31v at 4700 but I like the lower volts at 46k.

I think you got a great chip. I run at 4.4Ghz solid with no voltage adjustments. Can also run at 4.5Ghz but the temps are a bit high for everyday use.

You got a "Keeper"

That's a definite keeper if it's really stable and you don't get any WHEA errors.
My 3770K (delidded and Liquid Pro under IHS)
4.3Ghz 1.104v 19hrs P95
4.5Ghz 1.210v right now and haven't bothered testing other than some IBT and x264.
4.8Ghz requires somewhere around 1.32v, haven't tried 4.7Ghz.
Getting quite good temps, I have a Thermalright True Spirit 120 with MX-2 and Gentle Typhoon 1850rpm. In IBT v2.54 AVX core1 maxes around 70*C.
With x264 encoding (what I mostly need my 3770K for) getting well under 70 temps.

You guys are tempting me to start messing around with mine again. It's stable at 1.116V running at 4.4GHz, which preliminarily looks like a good piece.

My 3770k is about the same but temps in linx are ridiculous (its not delidded). The voltage in my signature is from bios which is higher than reported by cpu-z. I figure one day I'll delid but haven't been motivated to do so yet.

It could be good or bad, the voltage required past 4.5 really starts to increase a lot. It was a year ago so I don't remember exactly but I remember being able to do low-mid 4.x at pretty close to stock (maybe it was stock) on a preliminary boot test. 4.5 and up is where you will see how lucky your chip is. Temps also go way way up with every 100 mhz at that point as well. I remember initially thinking I would hit 5 ghz and then every 100 mhz my hopes got crushed. At 4.8 the temps were so bad that I stopped stability testing and just settled for 4.7 and since then I toned back to 4.6 on lower volts to prolong life.
