3700+ SanDiego, or Opteron 144/146?

Are there any benchmarks/tests that I can see how they stack up against each other? (cpu only like superpi or just 3dmark05?).

Sorry i read your question a littly more slowly; and what i posted was garbage, in other words useless info.

wait, the 3700sandiego is clocked at 2.2ghz

while the opteron146 is clocked at 2.0ghz. ARGH I want to know which one can overclock to higher stable speeds with standard hs/f

If you can get your hands on an Opteron 146 either CABYE, CABNE, or CAB2E stepping, you can get some serious OCs. I am currently sitting at 2.8GHz on stock voltage on air.

The opteron should overclock higher.

Yeah Opteron 146 would be a better choice and it's $201.63 on Monarch. But it's only $30 cheaper than the San Diego and the 11 multiplier may be worth the $30 if your mobo doesn't like very high FSB . . .

But if you have a good mobo (i.e. DFI, Neo4) then go ahead and get the Opteron 144/146 . . .

Is ther anyway that I can be sure before buying if the Processor is going to be CABYE, or CABNE, or CAB2E, or CABGE (noo)

and which one should I get for the best bang for the buck? 144/146/148? Do they all overclock to around 2.9ghz? Or do the 148 overlock higher?

Thanks.

AFIK the 148's OC about the same, to 2.8-3.0, provided they're not cabbage. As far as a retailer being able to tell you, I don't think anyone but TankGuys does and they are all out of the chips until at least January. According to what I have read, the cabbage batch was a very small batch and was gone a while back, and most (if not all) places have CAB2E's now. I would suggest if you can find a place that has a 146/148 in stock, buy it. You' should get a CAB2E, or a CABYE if you are lucky.

So I should be able to get 2.8 on stock hs/f with a opteron148?

yeah im stuck between:

operton
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103595
$229.00

3700
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103539
$235.00

on the reviews for the operton one guy got a 0542 cabye and the other guy got a a cabye 0543. im not sure if i really want to chance it or not. with the 3700 i at least get a heatsink/fan

im planning just go upgrade my old system and update the motherboard and cpu. i think i can use my old power supply, ram, and sound card. i just won a evga 6600 gt so i figured i would upgrade since the card is pci-e. i still dont know which mobo i wont to go with but its either a asus or dfi - not sure which exact model. if i got the operton id like to get a nice board so i can OC but id also like that anyways but i dont want to spend $200 on a board i dont even want to spend that much on a processer since im poor.

my current stats:
CPU: amd athlon xp, 2092 mhz thoroughbred - current clock ratio 12.50x - fsb 167.3 mhz - L1 64KBytes - L2 256KBytes
RAM: corsair DDD-SDRAM 200mhz PC3200 value ram ;o
Motherboard: Asus A7N8X nvidia nforce2 Ultra400
Video Card: ATI sapphire 9600 (ATI RV350) AGP 8X - Processor Clock 324MHZ - Memory Clock 378 MHZ
PSU - ASPIRE ATX-AS500-SV 12V 500W

Id like to pupgrade my RAM and PSU later on when i have more money to spend and maybe a nice video card after i get old with this one.

I saw the same feedback you saw on the Opteron 148. Hopefully, they weren't the only 2 that got CABYE's. I've got an OEM 148 coming from the Egg. I haven't had very good luck getting my hands on a CABYE till I ordered from Tankguys (should have it by Thursday). I ordered 2 OEM from Monarch, 1 retail from Monarch and 1 retail from ZZF. All four were CAB2E's! I've since rma'd (at a loss of course) both retails and sold 1 OEM. Hopefully, the Egg comes through on a CABYE for me.
