If so, how would you end up getting beyond 14 Gb/second on either chip anyway? Wouldn't you have to increase the FSB far beyond 1000 Mh before the Opteron would have any advantage?

Actually the FSB is normally 1000M unless C&Q is active. Combined memory and io raises it the other 400. I believe it is more in the lab speed as opposed to about 11G in the real world. I'm somewhere in the neighborhood of about 12G with HTT at 1100+. Serious OCers will gain more with the Opterons but for most of the best chip is still the 3700 or 4400X2. If buget minded get a 3200 Venice or 3800X2. The advantage of the 3700 is the next Sandy up is the 4000 and it's near the top of the CPU speed and costs a good bit more for a chip you want to OC. The 3500V and 3700SD get the best cost/OC ratio.

Jack, check with MWave, I think they are a bunch cheaper. :D

What's wrong with purchasing an OEM chip, then taking the money saved on the purchase and going out to buy a kick-ass heat-sink-and-fan? Get a Thermalright 90 and a nice quite 92 mm fan for about $40 round trip. It should kick the beejeezus out of the stock cooler.

The last time i paid that much for a heatsink/fan i got a 1 degree drop in temps, BOO! That one is probably better though. Could you recommend a place to buy the heatsink and a fan to go with it? Doesn't have to be dead silent, my system likes to huff and puff anyway.

Also, I'm still curious if my 3000+ newcastle heatsink/fan would work on an opteron.

well... It started out around 3:00pm Friday at work when i decided to take a peek as I always do at newegg Opteron selection. to my surprise 148 oem optys! WOW.. minutes later i was called into a meeting so i couldnt go through with the order. I come back only to find out there gone. :( Being that's my only missing piece to my new system, i said screw it. so I order a SD3700+. Yesterday i cancelled the order and placed an order with Monarch for Opty 148 OEM :D. From what I hear from XS report this are CABNE's. I hope I dont have to wait long

MWave only has the 150, 152,(165,175 Dualies). Ewiz is about the same, Looks like people hammered thes chips since about the beginning of last week. A friend of mind was looking at the 148 then found out it was out and decided to go with the 170 now they are sold out. Looks like a 150 or 165Dual is the best bet unless you can wait.

Don't get a Thermalright heat sink for OCing. They were killer heatsinks on the XPs but these newer Duals can out do the heatpipes. The TT Big Typhoon has proven to do a better job as well as others such as Scythe Ninja,1000,Arctic and Zalman. These are not cheap but if you want to get off the porch and run with the big dogs then it takes one of these. You may find a better deal on one at Xoxide, I've gotten some killer deals there.

On this link starting about #52 a friend has given up on the XPs due to the overheating. It's a great thread on building farms but a long one.
