Hybrid technology is relatively new, and will get better = higher and higher mpg as it develops, especially if that maddeningly elusive breakthrough in battery thechnology ever develops.
Then there's hydrogen fuel.
Still, those older Honda HF's were and still are absolutely amazing.

Childs site - the EPA mpg for the 1991 CRX HF was 49 city/ 52 highway!!! Still, I seem to remember a 55mpg posting for an earlier model year (one of their many tricks were extremely skinny tires = less rolling resistance). Gonna go see if I can punch up the proof.
Edit: Hee, hee, 1989 Civic (four door sedan!) HF clocks in at
50 mpg city / 56 mpg highway!!!
