16:9 8ms 1080p LCD HDTV w/ Built-in ATSC Tuner & HDMI

Seems like a good deal to me. Anyone know anything about this monitor?

This probably wasn't the one that was at Costco for $500 for a while was it? That was probably the 32". Still, that's a lot cheaper for 5 inches less. I'd read all the reviews you can and see if you can find a better deal on a 32"

I was interested in a Sceptre LCD TV as well but could not find out enough information to feel comfortable. Anyone else know about Sceptre? One of the few places that had any info on Scepter was at www.avsforum.com, but still not enough to help me feel comfortable about the model I was looking at.

I gave up and ended up getting an 37" Olevia 537H LCD, which is the model that has a ATSC/NTSCTuner, for $699.00 from Mwave.com (plus $38 shipping to New Orleans area) Link and am quite happy with it --sounds like the same type of TV you are interested in. Good ratings from Consumer Reports -- I am not sure if this particular rating is in their magazines, but it is on the Consumer Reports web site (which unfortunately requires a subscription to access most of the good stuff). No reliability ratings on this brand from Consumer Reports, though.

I've had the Sceptre 42" for 10 months, and like it a lot. I paid $1799+tax+$264 shipping from Costco in what turned out to be a phony $700 'sale', since the monitor was priced at $1599 no shipping 6 weeks later (2 weeks too late for a price match unless I returned it). Mine also only had one HDMI while they now have two.

A friend who was shopping for DLP saw it and bought the same Sceptre instead.

1080p is great and all, but it really only becomes an improvement over cheaper 768 pixel LCDs at 46 inches or larger.

Unless I am reading it wrong, this one is full 1080p which set it way apart from the $600-700 ones listed here and only ~$260 more. Thats why I am interested in it, it would make a great TV/Computer monitor.

depends on how you plan on using it too.

altho, has anyone noticed a lack of 42" 720p sets from major names? It seems all I see are 1080p sets, or a not so well known name 720p set. Which isn't necessarily bad, as I'm looking at getting a Vizio for my parents... but it'd be nice to have more options (and in theory more competition)

Actually when 1080P really matters is if you plan to use it with a PC or not, regardless of size- my brothers 37in Naga with 1080P was AWESOME with his pc and it made a HUGE difference over 768 as he had a whole lot more desktop area and used PowerDVD for DVDs so his PC was basically a DVD upscaler to 1080P over DVI to HDMI. Nevermind PC games at 1080P is great. There's not much else on the market that actually pushes 1080P except for PS3 and some high end HD players... so I think PC usage is the main attraction, at least IMO, to get 1080P over 768P. Besides the obvious reasons- having the best HIDEF res available on a TV for future proofing ;).

oh yeah- and neweggs sister shop has it even cheaper at $979
go to CHIEFVALUE .com - forum blocks their site name so cant give a proper link.

The $500 32" was not 1080P, it is 720P only (and scaled up to 1366x768 to make it look like crap).

i hate the media box that comes w/ the sceptre. It needlessly takes up space, and i found it an annoyance.

EDIT: nm, the sceptre in the OP link is the one w/o the media box.

that westinghouse costs $70 to ship. :(

I'm gonna submit this TV for wife factor approval tonight... might be gettin this thing delivered as soon as Friday. :) Gonna make a great bedroom TV/computer monitor.

I'm curious why people use TV's for computer monitors? I like big monitors as much as the next guy, but my laptop has the same res as a 1080p tv and it's 17". No way in hell I could use a 37" for day to day use.

Mostly used by die-hard gamers.
1080p is capable of 1920x1200 resolution which is more than good enough to take the game to the next level of display.
I myself, am somewhat happy with my Dell 2405 which has now started getting smaller and smaller as I see prices on the 1080p sets continuing to drop.
And btw, gaming on xbox 360 with 42" plasma is totally another different experience. :)

1080p displays are capable of 1920x1080 resolution (16:9), not 1920x1200 (16:10).

I was thinking of my 2405fpw's res.
Thanks for the minor correction, anyway.

Here it is for $1,023.49 shipped.

How does the Sceptre compare to the Westinghouse, in terms of quality and functionality? If nothing else, I definitely like the look of the Westinghouse more.

I just looked at LCD sets at Fry's. There's a BIG difference between the 32" and 37" widescreens. I'm currently using a 27" 4:3 CRT set, and the 32" widescreen looked smaller than my current tv (a Panny Tau), despite the extra width. The 37" would be the minimum I'd accept.

the Westinghouse is not really a TV- no tuner. Its more a HD/TV "HD READY" monitor.
The sceptre has "HD built-in" QAM/OTA tuner and cable tuner.

i gott this from costco for 1299 back in november. a month ago, the hdmi port died. i returned it and kept my 37" westy instead.

if i didn't still have the westy, i'd jump at this though. i would feel better buying sceptre brand in a b&M though. they are kinda cheapish build wise and having one connection fail within 6 months....

but nice price!

btw, avsforums should have some threads on this tv.

I had a Sceptre 42 inch 1080p for about 2.5 months and it was a problematic little pain. Also the media box was unusually hot, the media box couldnt do 1080p over component, and the HDMI ports wouldnt take 1080p over DVI without some major fooling with settings

I took it back for a 47inch Vizio and havent looked back, I love my Vizio so much more.

overall though in the 37 range id suggest the westinghouse anyday unless you have to have a tuner.

After getting wife approval for this TV I read about 20 pages of the avsforums thread linked above. Mostly at the start of the thread and then the last 5 or so pages (its 122 pages long!!) But I decided that I was not going to get this TV. The general jist of it seems to be it works great as a monitor, but the TV part of it is very poor. And since I will be using it for both HD Sat and OTA HD programming as well as a monitor, thats not acceptable. The westinghouse has no such built in HD OTA tuner so its not acceptable either. Guess my crusade for cheap 1080p will have to continue onward. :)
