I had a similar issue with my original black 360 Elite controller. My left analog stick was perfectly upright but my onscreen characters were always slowly walking forward. I could deal with it in FPS games but after falling off a roof or two in GTA4, I was mad.

I switched to one of my backup controllers and never looked back. It's amazing how much wear and tear I put on the thumbstick grips in one year.

Only time I've had that problem was due to me accidentally holding the stick in a direction when it turned on... after that, I just reconnected and it was fine.

That happens to me when my RB guitar is connected as controller 1 and I boot with the wireless controller. Not all the time tho.

That happened to me with the old N64, Gamecube, and Xbox sticks. But my issue was over the course of many play sessions for several months.
