was thinking about this (360) for a xmas gift to grandkids vs playing on the puter...

much difference between the quality of this verses the 7800 series cards?

granted there will be some issues with games as far as availablity...

will the IQ be a step up or pretty much the same as the puter video card?

I think the bolded word makes all the difference. How else can you get multiple players on the same console?

XBOX 360 with a couple of controller, otherwise they may be waiting for their turn at the PC.

How old? As a simple answer I would say 360 if you can get your hands on one prior to Christmas, but that could change depending on their age and what types of games they are interested in.

PC has better image quality since it can display resolutions as high as 2048x1536+. However, I'd get 360 for them or they'll come to you and tell you in 2 years that their games are slow on PC (again due to those high demands of resolutions, etc.)

If you buy them a console, rent games for $5. They are quietly glued to the TV. That's it. If your PC crashes even once, they might be upset:). Plus a 7800 series card costs as much as the console. PC is for hardcore gamers who are willing to spend more $ imo. Consoles are better suited for younger players, even based on the games they have and longetivity for a lot less $ (although at a reduced image and graphics quality after mid-to-end of the console's life compared to PCs).

It really depends on their ages IMO. If they are young the xbox is probably the better bet, but you might want to look into the games a bit. I've always felt that the Xbox was geared towards a more mature audience (well, at least of age), and the content of the games reflects this. On the otherhand, a PC is far more versatile if you wanted to get them something other than just a toy.

Get the 360. The 7800 needs a cpu, 1Gb of memory, a m/b, harddisk and a good gaming mouse. The 360 is a much more affordable platform for gaming.

As I previously stated I have a computer and by Xmas will have another. Have one running a 6800u and the other will have a 7800gt co. Was very curious to find out if they went from the pc to the 360 whether it would be a "downgrade" or better than the IQ of the computers graphic card. Thanks to everyone who replied, I appreciate you taking the time... Chances are I will just stay with the computer end and keep them caught up with some good games...the kicker here is the fact that the computer offers so much more versitality, but at a cost.

To answer your question,
If They have a nice HDTV (720p or 1080p) and at least a 1280x1024 monitor than the image result should be about 1 to 1, depending on how the game designer made the game.

Now if they have a normal TV( like me) the computer games will look 50% or more better.

Now to decided on which to get,
do they play consoles right now? If not i don't think they will move to it after only playing PC games.
I do not see the two systems(consoles and computers) on the same market though when it comes to games. PC's are better designed for FPS(doom), MMRPG(Everquest), and Startegy(Age of Empires). Now consoles are made better for Driving games( Gran Turismo), RPG (Final Fantasy), 3rd Person Platform (Mario), and Fighting(Mortal Kombat). Now of coarse each systems will get things other than the primary topic, but in the end this is what is comes down to. So i guess what i am tring to ask and point out is, What type of games do they like playing? then decided from there. *note* if the only FPS they like is HALO then buy the xbox, i do not consider halo as a computer FPS... it is slow paced :)

I hope this helps,
Chris

*edit* to add sports games go with consoles.

thanks chris...yes it did help
for what its worth...oldest grandson is 12 and really gets into CSS, he has a box (can't remember what it is, think its a sony) anyway, he always likes to come over on weekends and play CSS but I was thinking with the new 360 he could get as good or better performance...everything considered and what people have suggested I will stay with the puter for now...

thanks all!!!!!!!!!!

If you drop the "puter" I would tell you.

:p

Seriously, I would say an X360 is the better option unless you have a PC capable of running a 7800

You can upgrade a computer you cant upgrade a xbox 360. computer games have more options you get a mouse and keyboard IMO mouse over joystick keyboard over buttons on controller. I dont know about you but i play alot of first person shooters and i cant stand an xbox controller for fps.

Consoles are not meant for FPS. The only 'FPS' that ever worked with a console was Halo, and that game is painfully slow. I still prefer the PC though... although the 360 is a cheaper, simpler option.

If quality and FPS is important and you got the dow then go with 7800 gt.. From the way I see it xbox 360 games run at medium-high detail while pc games are Very High & Ultra. I watched a high res 1024x768 video of quake 4 for xbox 360 and it lacked much luster and detail that I see when I'm playing it.. Feels a lot less realistic. Although I had to over clock my 7800 gt from 450/1.0 to 511/1.17 (I think close to GTX speeds) and my cpu from 2ghz to 2.41ghz so it would run smooth, I have a feeling 06' games will not run smooth like they wouldn't on last year's 6800 gt. So if you're going with PC you have to upgrade every single year the price of atleast an xbox console, and I'll be waiting for a 8800 gt sooner or later heh. Also PC unfortunately only has a handful of good games, a lot of money in hardware for limited entertainment.. But I am so spoiled that if I can't play a game at its max settings I'd rather not play it at all, the blan textures on xbox 360 are a complete turn off, although they are excellent for $400 of hardware! I don't know much about ATI, but I think the gfx of xbox 360 and ps3 resembles last years geforce 6800 technology.. so it's already out dated by %200 which is why I hate consoles. with pc theres always patches to make multi player more fun... and you don't have to pay every month for live games either.. it's really too bad there can't be more good games for pc that are coming out exclusively on xbox, although there are more new good games out for pc than usual.. what a long borring rant, sorry

If you want a good console and still upgrade the pc id pick up an xbox 1. The system and the games are a lot cheaper and they still look good
if all you have is a standard def tv. You'll get to play halo 1/ 2 , forza, jade empire, pgr2 , etc. $400+$60 for a game and thats not including tax
doesnt seem worth it when theres still alot of good games to play on the other systems. I have a ps2 and currently playing RE:4 and Guitar Hero.
I also have a 7800gt and playing BF2 and Q4. I was thinking of getting the 360 but since the launch titles seem kind of boring or there just pc ports
id rather get another 7800gt for sli and still pay less.

Well if the kid is into console gaming, get him the 360, yeah, the 360 will be a great performer...for the games that it has on it, remember, the 360 is not a computer by any means, you can't just pop in a PC game and play that with it, it's a games only system with games specifically made around the hardware. From what i've seen, Call of Duty 2 360 > COD2 PC, visually, and I've heard that the 360 version loads parts of the game in half the time it takes on even the highest end PC.

lol Nextman, I was thinking the same thing!

Seriously! With the Xbox 360's lackluster starting lineup and expensive price tag (for a console), I'd stick it out on the console front. Wait for the other two systems to come out, then the 360 will have more games and a lower price, and you'll have other choices as well.

Get a cheap current-gen console to tde them over until then. Plenty of great games to be played now.
