Hey AT, I've been out of the gaming scene for awhile now, and I'm thinking to get back in it. My main dilemma is whether to go 360 or PC. I had one and a half years ago a 360 and my favorite games were halo 3 and gears of war. I had a pc also and Loved rpg's like diablo 2 and rts's like starcraft. My main question is which system has better games coming out for them, The pc or the 360? what big games are people excited about? that could help me decide to go pc or 360.

(Also if you have a decent matx pc and you're looking to sell, pm me)

thanks!

360 if you're a "user" - PC if you are willing to think once in a while...

With the exception of a select few, most PC games are console ports that come out a number of months after their console derivatives anyway. Many of those remaining traditionally PC exclusive companies, like ID software and Epic, have said that they are going to focus on console games first going forward. If you've already got a decent TV, the smart money is really on consoles. You won't miss very much, and the price would come out much better. Sure, PC graphics are going to be better, but the money you'll have to spend to keep it that way is disproportionately high. All things equal, I'd say go with the 360. Still, I plan to keep on upgrading my computer and using it as my primary gaming system despite the drawbacks. It's my hobby, and I love seeing demanding games work flawlessly on it in spite of the costs. If you feel like I do, then go with a PC.

If you like Real Time Strategy, or any type of strategy game, PC is clearly the best choice. You also get mods with PC gaming, which will make your favorite games better and make them last longer. Plus you can do a million other things with a PC.

Starcraft 2 is coming out this year, PC only. Does anything else need to be said?

Both. I have been gaming on the PC since forever. And yes, I admit I game more on my xbox 360, but if I want to play a game and its on both platforms I usually wait for reviews and to see if there are major issues on the PC version, if nothing major I am all over the PC version as its usually a better experience (mouse/KB) and usually 20 bucks cheaper than consoles. COD:MW is a great example. PC version is just sooo much better. I do have it for the 360 also, but mainly for kicking my buddies asses on live.

The only genre that PC has advantage over 360 is RTS. Consoles aren't comparable in that section. Every other genre is pretty much tied, or in favor of the consoles.

Ultimately, for purely gaming's sake, a 360 would probably be a better choice. It has a large library of enjoyable games, and there are very few if any PC-only games that you would be missing out on.

However, if you really can, I would suggest getting both. With SC2 and Diablo 3 coming eventually, how could you not have a gaming-PC ready? There are some other multiplayer titles that are great on PC, such as TF2 and the sort.

Here's why I game on the PC more often than my Xbox:

Most PC games are cheaper then their Xbox counterparts
Wider variety of games on PC
Free and better multiplayer
Free content (mostly) and mods

About your main question though, it really depends on what type of games you want to play. As people have already stated, SC2 and Diablo III are coming soon, but I'm sure there are some decent Xbox360 exclusives that will be coming out soon as well. I have both, so I enjoy the best of both worlds :).

You are in the PC forum. People are going to suggest a PC. Go to the console forum if you want people to tell you to get a console.

PC for western RPGs, RTS, MMO

PS2 slim for Japanese RPGs

360 for ever-changing variety in online multiplayer shooters

PS3 for blu-ray

Wii for waggle fun party games

Pick a game you really want and will probably really like. Is it on PC or 360?

If it was one or the other, I would pick PC, I need my Dawn of War 2. My 360 doesn't see much playtime, last I played was Call of Duty 4 and I thought that sucked.

I love that chart. Do you like games? No. Do you have any friends? No. Buy a PS3.

I think the Xbox dilemma comes down to controls. I tried playing Fallout 3 on Xbox and it was the most frustrating thing ever. It's hard to aim in the PC version because enemies move in erratic ways, but on the Xbox you need to deal with that and a lack of aiming precision. I found myself using VATS all the time because I couldn't aim my hunting rifle to shoot a moving target in the head.

If you like the console controlls and you don't feel frustrated when playing shooter games, buy an Xbox 360. If you're like me and you have a really hard time shooting things in the head when using a joystick, buy a PC.

edit:
Before some asshole brings out the price argument, ATI's best video card is less than $200 while an Xbox 360 with hard drive is $300. It all comes down to personal preference for which system you want. One system isn't radically more expensive than the other.

The only interesting game I can think of that won't appear on both platforms is Star Wars.

Which one?

Force Unleashed? 360/PS3 only

KOTOR MMO? PC only, probably

KOTOR II restoration project? PC only, but not available until 12-21-2012.

Do console owners have access to the same Fallout 3 and Oblivion Mods that we do? Because frankly, both of those games suck unless you mod them to your taste.

Er, turn based strategies? Adventures? First person shooters? Random time-wasters like flash games?

I tend to think it's mostly the other way around; PC usually has the better version. I think Fallout 3 on PC is a great game, but only because I'm hard core cheating with mods that are not available on Xbox or PS3. No carry limits, vendors have lots of money (so I can sell more things), and I have this plugin called "action boy hacking" where the computer terminals only have 1 choice. The Xbox version is damn near unplayable due to the low carry limits. The carry limit forces you to pick maybe 1 or 2 guns to use throughout the entire game because all of the available guns greatly exceed the carry limit. Can you imagine how shitty Quake would be if you could only carry 2 guns at a time? That's Fallout 3 on Xbox.

A few other games on Xbox suffer from bad controls. While I don't like HL2 on PC, the Xbox version is simply terrible. I thought ammo was in short in supply in the PC version, but this problem in a million times worse on Xbox because Xbox shooters usually involve spraying bullets to compensate for the lack of precision. In games like Gears of War, spraying bullets can be done because there is ammo around every corner. HL2 is not like this. If you're not good at aiming, you're going to run out of ammo. As a result of this, I run out of ammo and get ass raped even in the beginning parts of the game.

TF2 is another one that suffers from bad PC-to-Xbox conversion. Lots of console shooters use what is called "sticky aiming" to compensate for the lack of precision. Sticky aiming is when the game automatically aims for you when you're aiming fairly close to the target, and in Halo 3 it will actually rotate your view for you to keep your target in the middle of the screen. TF2 doesn't have any sticky aiming at all, and it makes the game nearly unplayable. Rather than trying to aim with the joystick and letting the aimbot help you (like in Halo 3), aiming in TF2 is done by setting your view to the correct height then strafing left or right to get your target in the middle of the screen. It's absolutely pathetic.

The 360 also requires you pay a monthly fee for online multiplayer, a few years of that adds up.

I prefer the PC because of how customizable everything is. I can use mods, free DLC, a variety of control options including the 360 controller, I can get better graphics, can easily repair or upgrade my system myself, and a bunch of other stuff. I also find that multiplayer is better on a PC because you have more control over what servers you join and who you play with, on average just joining random games on my PC I notice fewer 10 year old kids trash talking and other annoying noob stuff.

For most people who just want to play a game with their friends, that stuff probably isn't too big a deal. But I like tinkering with that sort of thing, so I doubt I'll ever own a console again. Plus the 360 controller is the most awfully designed thing I've ever used, I just can't seem to find a comfortable way to hold it and the buttons drive me nuts (I've lost count of how many times I've accidentally stabbed at a grenade instead of sprinting away in CoD4).
