360 MPEG4 Playback

Well, I bought a 360 ( + HD-DVD ) for my parents as sort of a multi-use machine as it has a use for everyone living there. One of the reasons I wanted it is because unlike me, they don't have any means of playing normal video files on the TV and since the 360 recently received the ability to play MPEG4-based codecs (XVID, DIVX, etc) on it, that'd work fantastically... or so you'd think?

Personally, I had never tried it out, because I use a PC to play my media (has no limitations and powerful enough to easily play 720p streams). So I finally gave it a try once XBL came up last night (stupid XBL being down :(). Amusingly enough, they added that codec pack to the AAC codec that I had already downloaded, so once I redownloaded that, I was in business.

Now the problem is... it seems to do an absolutely horrible job at resizing videos to fit the screen. I've tried every display mode... Normal, Stretch, Letterbox, Natural (very small :p) and none of them fixed the problem of just not putting stuff off the screen (except Natural, but it was a bit too small :p). I remember when I tried using the 360 for Transcoding ( before I got my PC hooked up to the TV ) and it had no problem displaying a transcoded file properly regardless of the codec of the source.

Is there anything I can do that might fix this problem? They can't transcode unless I build them a PC using my old (but still good... Athlon 64 X2 4400+ based) but still good parts as their current PC is a bit lackluster.

PS. The model I bought was a standard "Go Pro" from Wal-Mart. Should I return this and look for a holiday bundle (MUA+F2) to increase my chance of Falcon-age? One of the reasons I was hesitant on buying a 360 is the fact that I don't want it to RRoD on them but the PS3 which would serve it's purpose as a Blu-Ray player great... it lacks games which is one thing I bought for other members of my family still living at home.

There shouldn't be any resizing problems as long as you have chosen the correct output for the 360.

Also make sure your TV isn't set to any sort of zoom setting which could get confusing. I've made that mistake a few times already.

I'll have to check Zoom which shouldn't be an issue because WMVs play correctly no matter what dimensions the video was encoded at. It's just the new MPEG4-based codecs that won't resize properly.

Uh it's the 360 that's scaling it not my TV. You can try to blame my TV all you want, but I play videos using my PC on it just fine. I'm actually prepping a PC that I have in case I'd rather use that as it has Win MCE 2005 on it. Also, I did some checking and WMVs do it as well. Now I'm a bit curious... could it be some weird setting that it thinks my TV is the "psuedo-720p" that's actually 768 rather than 720. resizing to that amount would explain there being some of the picture chopped off on the top and bottom. Note that my TV is a true 1280x720p picture.

If that's so, then it isn't a problem because my brother and I bought my parents a Sammy plasma last year that uses that psuedo-720p anyway.

My TV has a resolution of 1280x720... not one of the off resolutions... how about yours? Is yours the exact or is it one of the derivations like I'm saying.

I was pretty amazed at how well the MPEG4 playback looks. Never had a problem with the scaling or anything.

Can someone please answer with their actual screen resolution? I'm wondering if this is a problem. I do have mine set to 720p but there's no other option than that .

I have a Sony 50" RP-LCD display, 1280x720 resolution. 720p is set in my Xbox display settings.

What's the resolution of the source video files?

EDIT: Here's how my videos look. Any blocks or pixelation that exist are a result of the recording device (cell phone).

640x480 is in the example.

I also played a video that was 672x288 and a little bit of the sides cut off.

My experience has been good so far
It's limited to sub HD resolution movies tho (weird isn't it?)
I think there'll be an update that supports that in the near future.
Anyone ever bought/rent HD movies from Xbox Live Marketplace? Are they still using MPEG2 for HD?

HD movies on the marketplace should be using the VC-1 codec...which is pretty standard and part of both Hi-Def format specs.

Actually I'd bet dollars to donuts that your resolution is 1366x768. Sony had a knack of using that resolution vs. 1280x720p for their "HD resolution" back in the day.

But to answer the OP's question...I don't know what to tell you, I've downloaded many different xVids in WS or 4:3 and they have all looked fine.

Yeah, you're right. I looked it up online and the res is 1386 x 788. Thanks Sony for sticking with the standard HD resolutions

I've been watching DVD XVID rips on my 360 and they look just fine on my 1366x768 LCD. I'm sure my computer would do better for resizing, but I can't complain for the 360 finally being able to play movies off my thumb drive.
