 Missed that. But, audio on older laptops was on the ISA bus. If you do a sysprep build and select PnP detect, it will cause a delay, but only for about 5-10minutes on the first GUI admin start.

I agree. I do not believe it is the RAM. I remember installing XP when it first came out on my really bad Celeron 600Mhz that had 64mb initially and it was workable. Sure, multitasking was out of the question but still it worked!

Sounds as if either the 2nd level cache for the CPU is disabled or the HDD cache is dead. I ran XP with 64MB before (not sure if I installed it with 64MB but nevertheless I used it with 64MB) and ofc it was slow as hell but nowhere near as slow as you have described. Had to disable a lot of services to be able to do something. Anyway, disabling the 2nd Level cache on a CPU can result in unheard slowdown of a comp just like when the HDD cache dies.

If the hard drive is bad, wouldnt that just not allow me to install at all? I dont understnad how this would account for the slowness.

You havn't seen how a bad harddrive can make booting to Windows take 2 hours
