3400+ Newcastle 754 or 3700+ Clawhammer 754? Which should I get?

The pins on my 3400+ Newcastle just broke and I was looking to replace it. My same chip runs about $195, but I found a 3700+ clawhammer for $185. It runs at 2.4 just like the 3400+ Newcastle but has the 1mb L2 and my question is, should I go for the 3700+??? I want to stay 754 for now, and I dont do any overclocking as of now either. TIA for any help!

Does your NC 3400+ not work? They sometimes work even with some missing pins, by the way. If you want to stay with socket 754 and you dont even want to look into overclocking then the 3700+ is the better choice (just because of the price, but it performs a bit better, too).

The pins just broke huh? 😉

If you're going to leave it stock definitely go for the 3700+ if the price is similar. The NC *should* OC better...but I guess that doesn't matter in your case.

BTW...I've seen the 3400+ for around $150-160 depending on where you look. Still for only $20 bucks more or so the 3700+ isn't a bad deal. 🙂

Well the desk broke and the computer fell, in the process the HSF and chip broke loose and some pins broke off. I tried it with the missing pins, it didnt work. The anandtech live price thing shows the lowwest 3400+ Newcastle as 195, I dont know many other places that have such a thing. I MITE do a very slight amount of overclocking but deffinatly nothing drastic!

Newcastle is best. Maybe you should get the 3200+ and overclock that if you don't want to go overboard with Ocing. Clawhammers suck at ocing.

Where did you find the 3700 for $185?

Damn...look what you've done. I ordered one...even though I KNOW I didn't need it. 🙂 Oh well hell of a price.

That 3400+ at 2.2 GHz with 1MB L2 cache is not far behind the 3400+ 2.4 GHz or the 3700+.
And it's $169 US.

Look at shipping cost though because IT DOES make a difference.

Yeah but I don't recommend the Clawhammer version of the 3400+. The extra cache makes little difference in most applications when compared to the clock speed of the NC. The NC's also overclock quite a bit better. For $4 more the 3700+ is a much better deal...which is why I just bought one. 🙂

Haha, the price threw me off! 🙂 I am going to spend a few more days looking for a newcastle that is cheaper, if I cannot find one I will be ordering a 3700+ as well!

I read the 3400+ Newcastle 2.4 GHz is also compatible with more RAM.

Damn, am I ever glad I got the one I got on sale at Compuvest. I really think I got a good deal with all the new components I got.

Not entirely true. There are C0 revision Clawhammers that do have some compatibility issues with certain types of memory. But both the newer Clawhammers and Newcastles are of the CG revision. The 3700+ at Ewiz should be a CG according to the code. 'AP' usually indicates a C0 chip while 'AR' and 'AX' are CG's (with the R being a Clawhammer and the X being Newcastle). 🙂
