i have an old dual core Pentium u5600 laptop (Lenovo s205s) w/2gigs ram.
I also have a 32gig ssd sata II drive and a spare 32gig sd card.

the laptop has a built in SD card reader.

Would this work ok?
32gig ssd would have Win7 pro 64bit, Avira anti-virus and a 4gig fixed swap drive.
the 32gig sd card would have Office 2007, data files, and any other small misc programs.

It will work. The card could be slow on input output and I wouldn't rely much on it for work related documents. Consider a form of backup. Maybe install Office on the SSD (if there is enough space) if load times are very slow.

Should be OK. It is a 2011 vintage machine - even has AHCI. There is a BIOS update for it that might help.

I've done this, it works.

As others have said, SD card access is very slow but it'll work for simple data like music files, pictures, documents, etc.

well I'm putting word and excel on the sd card.

after win7 pro 64bit install, 6gig fixed swap drive, all security + driver updates and avira anti-virus, I'm down to 7gigs free space. (I used disk clean up 'system disk files' already.)

need those 7gigs for future updates.

Office might load a bit pokey that way, but once it's loaded up it'll work like a charm.

is 7gb really enough for page filing and swaps? will it slow the system down?

I would personally not bother with the 32gb SSD and instead just buy a 120 or 128. Currently Newegg has the Crucial MX100 for $60 bucks. They have some 64gbs for $45. That is a low price but that is not even a BF deal. I have seen other good ssds cheaper with rebates and such. You were considering spending $100 on a new atom netbook, I would just spend a small amount of money and not deal with the hassle of trying to make 32gb work. I have done it before, but it is a headache. I recommend 40gbs or more with windows 7 or windows 8 just so you spend less time "under the hood" making sure your drive is not too full. Yes you can put stuff on sd cards but sdcards are not reliable.

I have done pretty much what you are doing now, but I no longer bother, just spend enough to get enough storage instead of trying to be penny wise, my time is worth it. I already understand you have the parts, but my suggestion is just use that ssd as a game drive, to reduce load times and such.

Oh replacing the hard drive is not hard on your model. I used to have the i3 version of that acer sku.

I don't see much of a reason to gimp yourself with 32gb when you get a 64 or 128gb for a few bucks more. It'll give you a LOT more breathing room and you won't have to worry about monitoring your storage.

I already have the 32gig ssd. did a winXP install on it.
when I switched to Win7, this ssd just sat collecting dust.

decided recently to see what I can optimize w/old hardware laying around.

haven't done the word/excel/powerpoint install onto the 32gig sd card yet.

Win7 BASIC is a much smaller install, IIRC. You're limited to 2GB of RAM but I doubt that'll be an issue here...

Run SystemNinja and Ccleaner to free up more space. I would have used Bitdefender Free instead of Avira though. It's cloud based and smaller. Good luck removing Avira, you need to use their registry cleaner. In my case I had to use safe mode and it still left its presence and an icon in the control panel.

It is limited to 8GB and the 2GB ram is for W7 starter . I would just get W8.1 home or basic it runs very good on old hardware and drivers are better supported than W7 . Got a Acer sata 1 laptop with ssd and w8.1 and the only missing driver where the tough pad but w8.1 accepted vista driver .The size of 32 GB should not be a problem for any 32 bit and 64bit can fit also .

Got the w7 starter on notebook and its mostly OEM released , windows install is only 5.5GB abouth the same as XP sp3 .The ssd give such hardware a second life ,often a very slow hd inside such a device D:
