3200 Athlon XP or 3100 Semphron socket 754

I am upgrading the cpu, motherboard and ram in an old Dell DimensionXPS R450 and keeping the hard drive and floppy. Anyway, I was wondering which of these two CPU's Athlon Xp 3200 socket A or Semphron 3100 socket 754 is a faster and better buy. I will not be upgrading this system to 64 bit so having a 754 socket motherboard is not required. I just want some extra speed over my P2 450. I was just wondering which of these two is faster because they are basically in the same price range. I use this computer mostly for the internet, word processing mostly and just some light gaming. Your input would be greatly appreciated.

I'm afraid if you want a sempron 3100+ you'll have to get a socket 754 motherboard because 3100+ sempron only comes in socket 754 variety.

the fastest socket A sempron is 3000+

I'm sorry!

I meant I will not need a 64 bit processor. Sorry for the confusion. I know the 754 Sempron 3100 processor needs the 754 socket. My mistake. What I meant was I saw some reviews where the Sempron was sometimes faster than the Athlon XP. Iwas just wondering on which would be better overall? Thanks for the help guys.

You're gonna need a new mobo anyway for any sempron or any Athlon XP.

Like Zebo said, you're better off grabbing the A64 2800+ because it's just as fast if not faster than the 3100+ sempron & it's cheaper with 64bit support to boot.

So you cant lose with the 2800+.

ok guys, you talked me into the A64 2800. I sure do appreciate it. Could you recommend a motherboard with onboard video for the 754 socket. Thanks to all who helped

on-board video is blurry. No good. If you must have it..

GIGABYTE "GA-K8S760M" is cool due to separte vram.. but still sucks.

You're better off with combo I suggested and 9200SE ATI card for $35

thanks ribbon, gunman, zebo and budman. I appreciate your efforts to help me. They where not invane as I have chosen to go with then the A64 2800 with the Epox Zebo originally suggested with 512 ddr 400 with the Radeon 9250. Thanks to you all

I am pretty sure you'll be happy with this setup & when XP 64 bit comes out soon you'll be 64 bit ready. 😉

2800 $120
9250 $40
EPOX $66
Ram $60

good choices.. don't forget to come back and let us know how goes.🙂 For $286 total you should have a really decent system ...the 9250 is a better choice due to higher core over 9200.. But neither will do hard core 3d gaming just so you know... But will be clear.
