I am looking to upgrade my system finally from an athlon 2.1 to a higher end 64...

I am hoping to go with a 3000+ or 3200+ and OC it to 2.65x10 or close to it with the 3000+, the one thing I really dont have a grasp on is the memory issue though. What are your thoughts on the following setup from Monarch:

Motherboard: 110254 - MSI K8T Neo2-F Audio/GB-LAN/USB/SATA/DDR- $109.00
Processor: 120422 - AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 512K 90nm (939 $179.00
Heatsink Fan: 130150 - Thermaltake A1772 AMD Recommended for Opt $35.00
Memory: 140358 - DDR (400) 3200 - 1 GB OCZ $225.00

Any thoughts on if it has a reasonable chance to be successful? Go with the 3000+ instead? Is the memory overkill for the basic OC?

The next choice will be a value-ish video card to boost the FPS over my 9700, probably a x700.

Always a chance...maybe not likely with that board

A few things... I hate Thermaltakes and I own one....Get the SP94 or the XP90....

Get the MSI K8N Neo2 mobo..spend the extra cash....

Dont know the vid card things!!!

Well one prob is, they dont offer the two fans you mentioned in their system pre-build... could go with:
Heatsink Fan: 130972 - Dynatron A21 SK-V2 for AMD Opteron/64/FX...

Thanks for the suggestion regarding the K8N, didn't realize the difference before between the T and N till you mentioned it and I looked. Basically one is the Via, one is the NForce 3.

Why the Thermaltake hate? I know they used to be quite spiffy, but haven't kept up enough.

Also making sure to get the Revision 2 ram on there.

What about the idea between the 3200 or 3000?

3200 is good
stock cooling should be fine (it was for me)
mem is good.

good luck finding an agp x700
you would be better off with the faster, cheaper and more available 6600gt agp.

3200 has a slightly better multiplier, and some like that.

Thermaltake sucks, simple as that.

True there... thought I heard rumor of it but could be wrong... perhaps the x800XL... who knows.

This always happens with overclocking noobies. Asking about a "likely" overclock for a 1.6A @ 2.5 GHz (the original stepping) or a 1700+ @ 2.4 GHz (the first Tbred B) or a P4 2.4 @ 3.5 ... These massive o/cs are the exception, not the rule.

I would anticipate a "likely" 2.4-2.5 Ghz on air with a 3000+ or 3200+ 90nm A64; anything after that is a bonus. 2.65 GHz out of the box without tweaking and know how? I doubt it - certainly not a likely overclock.

Remember, half of the people are exaggerating their stability at their top overclocks ("rock stable my arse), while the other half just lie outright about the number.

I'd only trust a small handful of overclockers with their numbers on this site because they offer strong proof. Among them, Duvie, Thugsrook, Zebo, etc... Everyone else - make sure your definition of stable coincides with theirs (for some people, if a system doesn't crash for an hour, they consider that stable. For me, if it crashes once it's unstable).

I definitely appreciate the reply on the "likely" wording... I am for sure a newbie on OC'ing. I read about it, and have read through the FAQ's (just not the mem one yet), etc.

Never actually tried it though. The difference in price between a 3200 and a 3500 is significant enough that I want to try the OC instead and see what it does for me.

We like that line of thinking around these parts.....

Jiffy thanks for the compliment of mentioning my names with those....I would throw in PastorJay, shimmishim, Oldfart, and Dapunishers as those I would trust their OC's cause they have similar definition of stability and test very thoroughly...

vald, you might be better off getting a better HSF somewhere else xp-120 is great with a 120mm fan

stick with the 3200+ and the neo2 plat. as for ram get anything you can afford. i recommend the patriot pdp stuff on newegg for 220.

I have an older 3200 winchester I bought back in october with a msi k8n neo 2 board and the highest stable overclock I can get is 2450 (245x10) with a zalman 7000 alcu cpu cooler. I have an ocz powersupply and the ocz 3200 plat rev 2 ram so nothing is holding me back but the processor and probably the on die memory controller that's causing me instability at higher speeds.

That

"Motherboard: 110254 - MSI K8T Neo2-F Audio/GB-LAN/USB/SATA/DDR- $109.00"

will not go over 250Mhz so, no, it's a terrible choice and Zero chance of 2650Mhz.

Look into the K8N neo2 then I say 85% success rate of 2500Mhz (250x10)... Over that is definity a YMMV deal based on luckoisity of chip.
