320 gb notebook HD (2.5-inch), 7200 rpm, 16 mb cache - $75.99

Hey all,

Just got myself one of these on ZipZoomfly after I was told the drive (Hitachi) that came with my HP dv6000 is rapidly dying. The Western Digital 3200BJKT has 320 gigs of space, a 16-meg cache and spins at 7200 rpm. This model (as opposed to the 3200BEKT) also has a free fall sensor, so the head will automatically lock to prevent damage if it detects the computer has been dropped.

If you don't want the sensor for whatever reason, you can pick up the BEKT for $79.99 w/ free shipping here:

That's $10 less than Newegg. Best Buy is asking like $115 for the same drive.

I've got a 320gb 7200rpm WD in my laptop right now - fast & quiet, great drive! Low heat as well!

i was in the same boat as you and went with the proven 320GB drives...you should wait a little while before you see more 500GB 7200rpm drives from other manufacturers, and also let the "bad" batches of hds go out! 🙂

Ditto, I really wanted a 500gb 7200rpm, but the reviews aren't so good. Seagate's been taking some hits lately 🙁

If you are think of spending $76, you might also consider spending just $2 more, and getting the new ultra-efficient, 500GB Hitachi 5K500.B drive. It is also available at ZZF now for $78 after a $10 rebate.

It's probably pretty comparable in speed to this 7200 rpm drive because of platter density (it has two 250GB platters), though I'm sure there are some aspects where it lags behind. Nonetheless, the differences noted in synthetic benchmarks are not necessarily perceptible in real life usage. So the extra 180GB of storage for just $2 more might be enticing.

I have a Seagate 7200.4 500GB since Feb and its been nothing but excellent for me in my T60. It's very quiet too to boot.

is there a noticeable difference between a 5200rpm and 7200rpm laptop drive?
thinking to pick one up for my MBP

Thanks!
