32 or 64 Ultimate

I just received my goodies in the mail and Im about to order Ultimate oem from eggster and I have a choice and im not fond of choices. I know you guys know your stuff so which one should I get 32 or 64. Its going to be a gaming machine. Thanks in advance

32 because there is not and may not be 64bit native games for a while. Also, there is (i believe I have read) some compatability issues when running 32bit programs not built for vista on the 64bit version of the os.

I'm using Vista x64,not encountered ANY gaming problems,I have about 25 games installed at present(not including very old 16 bit games for obvious reasons),as to compatiblility issues with 32 bit programs can you name them?

All the 32 bit applications I have tried work fine, you'll find programs that work with Vista x68 will also work with Vista x64 in general.

Remember beauty of Vista x64 is you can run virtually most 32 bit software/games too. Also note nobody can guarantee Vista will run all 32 bit software, regardless of whether its Vista x64 or Vista x68.

I think in a few years time when some games start using 4GB of ram plus you'll find Vista x64 will have the advantage over Vista x68,something else to think about.

FFXi won't run under vista 64bit at all...I play that alot still. Max Payne also won't work for me. Those are the 2 I remember.

I don't have those game so can't confirm if its a driver or Vista problem, however I can give you list of some games I have installed and fixes needed.

Do note Vista x64 has no 16 bit legacy support in the OS.

Star Wars Galaxies( select WinXP SP2 compatiblity mode and run as admin) I had to do this so I could get updates.
UFO- Afterlight(as above or game won't run)
Silverfall
Baldur's Gate with exp pack
Baldur's Gate 2 with exp pack
Morrowind with all EXP packs
Vanguard
Oblivion
XCOM-Enforcer
Steam(TFC,CS,DoD etc)
Space Rangers 2 (without Starforce)
Might & Magic 8
Stalker
Prey
UT2004
World of Warcraft and BC exp pack
Dark&Light
Jedi Outcast
Jedi Academy
KOTOR
KOTOR 2( get the DLL. patch for sound fix)
StarCraft+ Brood Wars.

In general try to run the game as normal,if it does not run then select "WinXP SP2 compatiblility mode" and "Run as Admin" in properties of the game concerned.

Btw quick google on FFXi ended up at Vista64.net,LINK.

did a google search for "FFXI Vista", the first link came to a FFXI forum
that says, "Don't use Vista with Final Fantasy XI." That's not a direct
quote, but after the first couple pages it's probably fair to say that
there's a LOT of problems running FFXI in Vista.

That SAID, you're lucky I decided to look a little further and found a link
at playonline.com (I think this is the support site for the game?) which has
a nice new version of the Play Online patch system for Vista which will
probably get you up and running...

http://www.playonline.com/homeus/headline/news01.html

Here's the link you'll want to get too eventually:
http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/dow...l?pageID=media

Basically you download the Vista Compatible version of Play Online, install
it.
Then you install FFXI using the new version of Play Online.

Good luck.

As for Max Payne that is incompatible with Vista period, not a Vista x64 problem ,link and

more info.

,Max Payne 2 runs fine however.

Any 64 bit CPU ie..Athlon 64 ,Athlon x2 ,Intel Core 2 Duo etc....

If you have 3GB+ of RAM, then x64 is worth considering. Otherwise, there aren't really significant performance benefits from using it. FWIW, I am running Vista 64-bit Ultimate and it works great. I still have one or two peripherals that don't have drivers, but most games run fine.

Nice Thanks for the quick response, I had XP Pro 64 for a week and couldn't get anything to work, Sounds like Vista Ult 64 wont have that problem. Thanks agian

Drivers is probably the most important thing with regards to Vista x64,however they are geting better all the time(I have them all for my PC,but pretty easy to check your hardware manufacturer for 64 bit driver support),do note from what I read Microsoft's next OS Vienna is going to be 64 bit only,so I'm hoping the push for 64 bit software will come with Vista x64 paving the way.

If everybody sits on their asses and stays with 32 bit ,we never get it done 😉.

I didn't switch to vista yet...no benefit to me (not at the price I'd have to pay). Probably will by the end of the year, but XFI cards have extreme issues yet...and it worries me.

Do i have to redo all my program installations, game installations, windows settings, etc if I go from Windows Vista 32 bit to 64 bit ?

Guess so. If I have to do this I won't be changing till I get a 2nd powerful pc so I can redo a little at a time. I hate having to format and reinstall just to go to Vista 64 bit.

I think when I build my new system I will get the 32 Bit CD and a later on have Microsoft send me the 64bit one for a few bucks

Same here, I was a little apprehensive to switch to vista x64, but I have had zero problems with gaming with my copy of ultimate 64

I'm gonna say Vista 64-bit.

Obviously, there can be issues, but overall, i think it's a solid option especially with the future in mind.

If you have XP still, you can always dual boot just in case.

Gaming on vista at this point in time is still kinda bad because of the driver issues for the graphics cards; but im running ultimate 32bit and it seems to be the same as XP's gaming

**previous post got mucked up... sorry**

I have a few keys for vista that are legal, I know they work with 32 bit, so are you saying I can get a disk for 64 and they will work for that too?

What if you only have 3 gigs.. i have 3 gigs of ram. Is vista 64 worth it? or should I just stick with vista 32. I worry a lot about compatibility.
