Just a comment on solaris.

We use Solaris on x86 ordinary pc's. And they rock. IMO solaris is the best when it comes to server duties. this is just based on personal preferance. Even on crappy hardware and fairly heavy load (traffic) Solaris is rock stable!

A tad expensive for my blood 🙁

I thought it was closer to $7k USD for the base.

I'll be damned, Sun has lowered the price. 🙂

I had a look in the Sun store, and indeed, $7.595 for the base model.
Still a tad expensive though...

That's the price I always remember seeing them at. I've been trying to get my boss to buy one, but he always laughs at me.

I suppose I could understand his viewpoint. That is a lot of money. 😉

A Sun box is still something I want to get, but obviously that one is out of the picture. 😱

In the area of older, used 64-bit Sun workstations, are the Sun Ultra 10's with processors of about 300MHz to 400MHz a good choice (they appear to be affordable on Ebay)? Can one upgrade them to dual processor systems later on with the addition of a CPU, or does going SMP require another line of workstations?

I handed him a printout of a specsheet and price list ($18,799) and he said he would put it in for me. 😛

From looking at the inside of my U10 and various things I have read about them, I do not believe they are SMP capable. I have the 440mhz model (I believe the last of that line). I definitely think you should stock up on RAM though, especially if you are running Solaris. I've only got 128, and between that and the stock 3600rpm IDE drive, its hurting. Replacing the hard drive gave it an increadible speed boost (atleast it felt like it).

The Ultra 10's are not SMP capable, they're basicallu Ultra 5's in a tower chassis.
You'll need an Ultra 2 or Ultra 60 for SMP.

Ultra 2's aren't too expensive, but they're pretty slow.
Both the 2's and 60's use SCSI disks though, so disk performance is better than the 5/10's.
Speaking of which, the disk performance of the 5/10's is pretty crappy, even with a good disk, due to the crappy chipset.
