It doesn't fit the cop haters here, but the 312 foot, one-shot pistol-stop (at night) of a sick individual bent on murder didn't even get a discussion? How many lives saved?

What a tough crowd

The asshole was tagged with one shot from a .40 SW...one handed shot. Granted it's no record, not even close, but given the circumstances it's pretty awesome.

Asshole wanted to go out in a blaze, and got a candle snuffing instead.

Well done!!!

A 100 yard, one-handed shot with a pistol, while holding the reigns to two horses with the other hand? This guy is a god damn modern Wyatt Earp.

Damn I read the thread title as "312 foot shark."

Was hoping to see an article about underwater godzilla from the Plioscene :D

Oh, well as long as they got this guy, then I guess it's OK if they kill your friend when they pull him over tomorrow. We'll call it even.

My problem is people are making it off to be a great shot, but I think 99.9% of it was luck. Could the guy do it again if he had a hundred chances? I doubt it. Is he a good shot normally? I mean really I could take out a sparrow at a thousand yards with a pistol if I got lucky enough. That's kind of what this shot feels like.

It's not really luck if he practiced at that range. 10mm, and .40 S&W which was birthed from 10mm, is definitely capable of repeatable lethal shots at that range. Not taking anything away from the guy, and Yes luck was involved, but, if he had done some previous practice at that range there is a decent chance of expecting to hit from that distance. Certainly not 70% or higher, but, maybe 30% if he'd practiced some...

You may be right, and even the shooter says luck was involved.

312 feet is not a problem in daylight, not in line of fire...holding two horses and having all the time in the world. What happened still happened and the intent was to drop the bastard....and he did.

True enough...I own a SIG 229 (shooter was supposedly using a springfield with .40SW) and use supersonic 165 grain hollow-points. If I take my time, I can regularly hit a man-target at that range with high accuracy. By the same token though, at least in my case, I wouldn't lay any money on a NIGHT shot under duress.

Also a really good shot (and by a civilian!), but when digging deeper, the actual distance was 56 yards (the press exaggerated a bit). That's not bad with a 6 inch .357 Magnum. That's about the maximum lethally-effective distance for that small round.

Cop shot this guy when idiot wouldn't put down the knife. Hey!! Never bring a knife to a gunfight.........STUPID!

He has the benefit of known range and shooting with no windage tho, and with a pistol caliber at that range it's very significant.

Yep, for sure. I'd say if he practiced he was probably 50% lucky in the conditions he was in...if he had never practiced at that type of distance then yeah, pretty damn lucky. Of course, using a 10mm/.40S&W over something like a .45 ACP somewhat reduces the luck quotient...

He didn't yell halt and give him a chance to surrender?!?

JKing, glad to see this dumb ass taken out swiftly and uneventfully. Good on the cop for making a hard shot.

According to some forum members here in the past, a shot like this with a handgun is not possible at all even under ideal conditions.

Does anyone deny that Cops do good things as well?

As a matter of fact......just look to Berkley, and the asshats on this same forum that spout stupidity. Of course they'll be the first to whine when some psycho attack them or murders their family.

My take is that cops have a VERY difficult job. There are so many unsung acts of bravery by so many cops that pass unnoticed, and the screw-ups ALWAYS get posted.

I spent many, many years wearing a gun, or carrying a rifle for a living. I no longer have that need as part of the job, but I still remember the awesome responsibility, and the difficulty of deciding, when to use it.

I can say that when I did use lethal force, that it wasn't with glee or any sort of euphoria. It was always with a grim feeling of having to do something that always left a bad taste in my mouth. It's the same with most any cop that has to use their weapon. They aren't looking to kill, but to live.

So you don't think there's a problem with all these shootings of Unarmed persons?
