1: Tyan Tiger 230 dual-PIII 733 MHz Mobo
2: CPU cooling fans (one each on the two CPUs)
2: Case cooling fans
1: ATI Xpert 8MB AGP Video Card
1: NIC (PCI)
1: 56 K modem (PCI)
1: audio card (PCI)
1: 2-port USB card (PCI)
2: 10 GB (E)IDE disks
1: internal IDE CD-R/RW drive (sorry, forgot to mention this earlier)

Except for the brand new case (Antec SLK1600) and the 300W power supply that came with it, all the components are old.

yeah for older cpu's that should be just fine i would think. someone please post if you disagree. antec power supplies are horses and should be able to handle that setup without a hiccup.

There are ALWAYS gonna be those who advocate having you spend $75 to $150 on the psu, but i have run similar to what you are running on less than 300 watts.

Most of the HP, Dell, etc boxes you buy today run on ps of 185 to 200 watts!! And to this we add our stuff! Not me as i always build my own, but you know what i mean.

YOu are fine with what you are doing.

I run generic/stock 300W and 350W power supplies all the time, rarely ever have problems.

I doubt you will have any problem with the rig you listed on a 300W power supply.

For this system, a good (such as Antec) 300W PS should suffice - but for insights into how a bad PS (even a 400-er) can cause issues on an Athlon XP, and during testing, even a Celeron 1.3GHz - read my thread ... about the nightmares I've been having!)

Never underestimate the importance of a reliable PS!

ashum, you simply got a bad power supply is all, but i looked at the weight you mentioned for the power supply you had, no wonder. Its the cheapest of the cheap. This person here has a much better ps to start with, so you are comparing apples and oranges here!

He is way fine with the ps he has.

nork - I agree with you - I know how good Antec PS'es are! That's what I'm picking up this evening for the nightmare system I described.

It was truly hilarious when I pulled the PS out yesterday - I expected it to fall into my hand. FLOAT is a more apt description for what it did :)
