300GB IDE HDD Support for ASUS P3B-F

I have a PIII 600 system which is using Asus P3B-F motherboard with 440BX chipset.. Recently the hard disk (40GB) of that system died 🙁

As a result i plan to get a big hard drive for it.. my friend know a supplier that can offer me maxtor 300GB 7200 rpm 8mb(not sure is 8 or 16mb) hdd with cheap price..

Here is my question, I need to know whether my m/b support hdd of that big? i tried to search on asus webpage for newest bios, but so far the one i'm using is already the newest one, version 1.006 dated june 2000.. i think at that time 300gb hdd does not appear yet.. so can anyone tell me whether i can use that hdd or not? i saw options in the bios to adjust the hdd settings manually (silynder/sector/etc).. if my m/b cannot recognize the hdd can i adjust it manually in bios?

Thanks in advance for you helps.. 🙂

The only way that it would work is with a seperate controller.
(the 440BX chipset has trouble with drives over 80gb or so)

It would be a shame to put a 300gb drive in to a PC an run a
drive that large @ata33 or 66.

what about an external enclosure for hdd that can support up to 300gb? i found one that is usb 2.0 interface, will my old mobo still support the hdd?

Not sure of your locale but quite a few motherboard/cpu combos can be had for around $100 or so that would run quite a few rings around that antique but if the usb 2.0 enclosure, your OS and with an add-in usb 2.0 pci card(range from free to $30-40) you can have 300GB of storage.

i'm using windows xp proffesional, updated to service pack 2; my mobo have built in usb port, not sure is 1.1 or 2.0, but i think the enclosure is backward compatible with 1.1 rite?

my friend can help me get a usb2.0 hdd enclosure that can support up to 300gb ide hdd for a cheap price, only around us$25.. ( my friend never try this before so he cannot help me, he only can help me to buy )

so now i just want to make sure one thing : my mobo don't support 300gb hdd, but if i use a hdd enclosure that can support 300gb, will my system able to fully use the 300gb of the hdd?

thanks for reply 🙂

You definitely will not be happy with the SPEED of the External
HD running in USB 1.0 or 1.1 (most BX boards were USB 1.0)

It runs slightly faster than a floppy in terms of speed.

The IDE controller would be the best choice in your stituation.

Also, you could add and USB 2.0 controller and disable the
onboard USB to get the speed increase.
