$300 to spend, what upgrade(s) would YOU do to my current system?

Lifer
Here is my current system.

Looking to do an upgrade on my system, sort of leaning towards a dual format DVD burner, or a new video card, maybe a 9700 Pro or a 9800 Pro if I could find one on the For Sale forums. Maybe you have a better suggestion?

$300 is without question the max cash here. I don't plan to go over that limit whatsoever, and would like to stay UNDER it as much as possible, I see many of the +/- DVD drives are going for ~$225. (NEC and others)

Any thoughts?

Give us some idea of what you use your PC for. Gaming, DTp, Graphics Design etc...😉

[edit]

You have a nice system there, but for me I think your on the right track, however, if your considering a new graphics card such as the Radeon then perhaps a tweak in the CPU side wouldn't go a miss, that is if your Mobo will take it. DVD burner on the other hand is a must IMO. 🙂

That's alright... at least you're trying to help, unlike our friend over there.

If I could get a Pioneer DVR-106D and say an Athlon XP 2400+ T-Bred for $300, would that be a worthy upgrade? Is a 2400+ going to be a big improvement over my overclocked 1800+?

Nice rig...

Do you have to add/change something or not? Is it imperative. Was this more of a "Well...lets change it" or "My programs are running slow - I need an upgrade".

By looking at that all I would reccomend would b a epox 8rda+/2500+ combo that will come out to under 200 and overclock to hell

But if you really don't need to modify anything i highly suggest you don't because you have a pretty nice rig as is.

But yeah....I vote NewMobo/CPU and I'm sure you'll notice the speed increase if you can (should be pretty safe...only early bartons didn't oc that great) push that 2500+ to 2.1/2.2Ghz

Well of course it isn't imperative. 😉

You may be right though, I don't NEED anything, but I really think I WANT a DVD burner now. The Pioneer A06 looks really nice... maybe I will just pick one of those up.

Anything you plan to start burning once you get the burner? I know DVD's, but what ones? Or it could be data, but for that you can use a bunch of CD-R's since they're so cheap compared to a $1 per DVD disc.

Id personally save up another $300 and upgrade mobo, cpu, and video. Id go 2500+ Barton, Epox 8RDA3+, and 9800 NP. Video encoding is almost entirely CPU dependent, not video card. Gaming on the other hand. With the $300 limit id get a 9800 non-pro.

if it were me I'd stick another 512MB of ram, and then use the rest on Cheap Big Hard drives with 3 year warranties on them (WD SE)

Buy 30 shares of ATYT and sit on it. With their dominance in the market right now, and possibly getting in with MS on XBOX2, it could buy you a new rig in a year or two...

Or just blow it on a 9800 NP, hell that's what I plan on doing 🙂

I'm not sure if you could do this with 300 but...you could look for a hot deal on a dvd burner(I've seen dual format as low as 150). Then sell your ti4200 for about 100 bucks(i think that's what it's worth), then get a Radeon 9700 NP for like 225 or something close to that (is that how much NP's cost? My Pro cost me 300 a few months ago).

The SCSI syndicate has gotten to you, haven't they? Haven't they!?

I wouldn't upgrade anything right now. Your computer is pretty good. Mine is similar (at least for gaming), and I can play everything I've thrown at it. I'd hold that cash for an emergency or maybe take your wife/gf out on a nice date.

*begins crying* YES!!

😛

Unfortunately I don't have the cash for a 15k drive right now, but I have a 10k drive and a whopper of a scsi controller on the way. 🙂
