Nor have I, but before they merged with Seagate, their customer service was top-notch when having to RMA one of the many bad hard drives of theirs I had.

Yeah, Maxtor had great service back in the day. I still have 6 Maxtors still working just fine.
Now with Seagate in charge, it sucks. No cross shipping, and so if you want to save your data from a big drive, you either have to buy a new drive, or use Seagate's data recovery service for lots of $$$.

 
My only hardrives that ever failed were maxtors.
One of them had to be replaced 4 times because it kept failing.
This was before the SG takeover. One was a 30gb (the one that kept failing)
and the other that failed was a 120GB.

WD and Seagate I've never had any issues with.
 
If the drive is indeed 320 gig (as it appears), then it will be a Seagate hard drive in a Maxtor box. Think about it. Have you seen any 320 gig Maxtor drives?
 
seagate announced awhile ago they would retain the maxtor name for their value-line of drives. in other words, their crappiest stuff.

I have owned dozens of Maxtor drives and never had a problem. Regardless of the brand, For $60 you cannot beat that price or get a 4GB flash drive.

They will retain the NAME, but seagate now makes all the drives.

Everyone seems to be getting the 7200.10 320GB drive, this is one of their better consumer drives (Seagate).
 
but theyre not the same drives. i remember seagate specifically stating that the maxtor line would be their cheapest, lowest quality drives (with shortest warranties to boot). the seagate name would remain as their 'quality' and more expensive line of drives. i think this is why we see seagate branded drives always that much more money then any other brand, and maxtor is always at the bottom of the price pile. then they can give deals on the good stuff to bring them into the middle pricepoint range and cover all tiers of consumers. i wish i could find that news article about the switch....

I wouldn't get it if it were a maxtor either, but all MAxtor 'Basic' series drives are Seagate 7200.10's with a 3 year warranty instead of a 5-year 😉

You're not understanding that the NAME Maxtor will be their "lower" quality line, but Seagate is taking 7200.10 drives and putting Maxtor lables on them. They are no different than regular seagate drives, but with a smaller warranty. It's easier and much cheaper for them to manufacture one product. That's why they are giving you the "free 20GB". It's easier for them to just give their drives in place of Maxtor. With Seagate, you are paying for the name just as much as the quality.
 
Guess I'll have to eat my words on this one, I didn't realize seagate and maxtor are together now.

I ordered one to try.
