$300 for video card - X1800XT 512?

I would like to spend around $300 on the video card for my new system, and from all the reviews and benchmarks I've seen, the X1800XT 512MB model seems the most solid for that price. I have no plans to go dual-GPU, and if I decide to overclock it will be out of curiosity more than a hardcore desire for more speed.

BUT I know there are other fast cards to be gotten for around $300...anyone have any thoughts about my tentative conclusion? and please, don't advise me to "save a little longer" for an X1900..$300 (OK, maybe up to $330) is my max. thanks!

Get this. It is the best bang for the buck going right now IMO and fits your budget.

For $350-$400 u can get an x1900 xt,which is arguably the best card out there.It beats the x1800 xt in a lot of shader intensive games such as age of empires 3,GRAW,oblvion etc....
On newegg u can get an ASUS radeon x1900 xt for $360.
but if u can't spend more than $330.Then the x1800 xt is a great buy.And those things are really overclockable even on the stock cooler.And if u change the cooler,u can OC it really well.
So if u can cough up another $30,u can get one of the best cards out there,but if u can't if u won't be disappointed with the x1800 xt 512 mb(the 512 mb is important)

OK...(grumble grumble) I thought most x1900xt's were closer to $4-500. thanks for the info guys, I'll probably go with that one

Definitely the way to go with that X1900XT there. Newegg rocks, and ATI almost always beats nVidia for bang for your buck in my opinion. Additionally, you can do HDR + AA with the chuck patch in Oblivion and maybe other games too, nVidia can't do that with any of their cards.

only in the high end market does ati offer good value.
the bang for buck cards ae all nvidia.
7300gt/7600gs/gt even 7900gt that can be had for under 230 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814127098) on newegg.

when was the last time you heard ati having a good value product in the midrage segment. the x1900gt is more expensive than the 7900gt and gets its ass hended to it too.

i do agree that for the 300-400 bracket nothing beats the x1900xt but thats it.

You can get 1800XT for 220$ since a very long period of time, why get a 7900GT then

to compete 7600GT, we have X1800GTO

Because a 7900GT runs cooler and slightly faster and has higher overclockability, especially when volt-modded...

well I dont think a 256mg version of the 1800xt is a nota fair comparison to the 1900xt..it would I presume get killed...but a nice price

I hear still alot of issues with the 7900gt and bad cards...also you need to do physical mods to get performance..you can risk damage ..even if it easy

whereas a 1900XT requires nothing and if you can get it for $330-350 seems the best solution....IMHO

nope the x1800gto cost above 200 on newegg and the lowest price after rebate is still 160. 30 more than the lowest priced 7600gt and it run hotter, need more powerful PSU (those things cost money) .

x1800xt WAS a good deal when stock of bieng soled of to make room for x1900gt but its been priced much higher for the past few weeks. basically it was never meant for that price. the 7900gt keeps going down.

i am not a fanboy. i love my ati card and how it can play oblivion at 1280x1028 asnd how pretty it looks. but i don't hate NV either. true the x1900xt is a deal beyond deals but then x1900xt is in a price range of its own. ati has (and will not have untill R600) any good card to compete with the 7900gt. even the RV570 is going to be a x1900gt with a different core so it probably won'ty be able to compare.

plus i see you made no mention of the 7300gs/gt.

face it. ati's midrange solutions all consist of either crap overpriced cards (x1600) or crap cores from good cards (x1800gto,x1900gt). the x1800xt is only a midrange card cuz of its late release. it was never meant for the 200-300 price point.

Unfortunately, this seems true...

Where is the quiet, ~cool, and fairly powerful $180 card from ATI that I would buy in a heart beat? Nowhere, evidently...

The x1900xt is a good deal @ $330 though, that is what I paid for my 7800GT at this time last year. It's combination of heat/noise/power consumption removes it from being even a consideration for me though. The last time I did that I ended up with a 6800U, and that didn't make me too happy...

Lol. What do you think the 7900GTs are?? I have no problem with speed-binned parts. That's how a lot of computer parts come into existence. Where do you think low-end processors come from? Yup, speed-binned chips. Guess you better ditch your Opteron since it's a "crap" core from a good processor line huh.

Hmm. That makes absolutely no sense. That's how product cycles work. A new card comes out and the former high-end card drops down into midrange. That's like saying the GeForce4 Ti 4800 has no place as a low-end card since it was never intended to be sold as such. :confused:

is is that why the x1900gt came months after the x1900xt and the 7900gt comes right along side 7900gtx. besides no prof exists that 7900gt are speed binned. the most popular idea is that 7900gt are simply not tested. 7900gtx are tested and those that fail become the KO and CO or supeclocked editions.


while the x1900gts are probably bad cores that failed 1 quad. also i don't mind buying binned parts... my x800gt is proof of that. but when was the lst time i saw a ati card recommended in the value segment.. also no the x1800xts short short life is not right. it was meant for the 500 price point. if thats how product cycles work then ati should have kept making them see. but it was replaced by the slower and more expensive x1900gt.


7900gt was made for 300 price point. x1800xt got there because is was late to the party.
