I don't really like ATI, but if they are the best by a longshot in this price range, let me know.... what's a good card now adays?

I've been a big fan of my XFX 7900GT that I got for $300 a couple of months ago. You can get a factory overclocked model from EVGA or XFX for less than $300. The ATI alternative in a similar price range would be the X1800XT or the newly-released X1900GT. In the reviews that I have seen, the 7900GT has been able to beat these cards in most games (the only notable exception that I saw is Battlefield 2. For some reason, that game always swings in ATI's favor). Good luck with your purchase!

Although I don't like ATI I was planning to buy an X1900XT that was only $300 last night, I'll probobly spend $40 more than that on one now. I'd recommend getting a revised edition of the 7900GT. Does the 512 run a lot better than the 256 though?

You would be satisfied with ither the X1800XT or the 7900GT (assuming you get a stable one) but if you can spring the extra ~$40, go for an X1900XT.

X1900XT gets my vote there cheap now and gives you a good performance increase from the 7900GT
