First I am going to premise the fact this will be an Nvidia card. Don't try to convert me to Ati, becasue I already own ATI cards and my preference is NVidia. I also want to soft quadro this card. I want the 6800 for the pipelines and I believe the 256bit memory..Am I right??? Also needs to be AGP since my mobo is AGP and I plan on holding onto it for awhile.

At pricewatch I see these...

6800Ultra 128mb = $295 ... never albatron so I guess 333 for a BFG

6800GT 256mb = $369 ... I like the leadtek for 377

6800GT 128mb = $308 ... I guess it looks like Asus!!!

6800GE 256mb = $333 ... WTF is a GE...looks liek a mistake!!!

6800LE 128mb = $251 ... Agian leadtek of XFX fo r270's....

So what is the deal??

256mb or 128mb???

256bit or 128bit and cheaper 6600's???

What is the diff between the gT's and Ultras and whatever the heck the LE is...

I notice the LE model says HDTV output...Is this the only one that offers this?

never heard of GE...gamer edition?

GT is just a lower clocked ultra without the beast of a fan. Other than that is iidentical and reccomended what most people get

256mb or 128mb???

How much lower clocked and are there brands that can OC back to those ultra levels???

I would go to Newegg and do a search for the 6800GT and read the reviews. The Ultra has slightly higher clock speeds than the GT, but in my opinion, it's not worth the extra change. All the 6800 cards are 256 bit, just means they have more bandwidth. Also, you'll be shortchanging yourself if you get a 6800GT with 128 megs of memory, get one with 256. The Evga 6800GT seems to be a pretty popular one, I think it also comes with doom 3. Also, avoid the LE versions, they are toned down. Cheaper yes, but you get what you pay for.

What about this mpeg 1/2/4 encoding...Do they all have it??? Do they all have HDTV ouput ability??? I only see it listed on the LE versionss but I see it is 350/700 versus the 350/1000 of the GTs....

Help...

Dude were in janvier and the next generation cards will come popping out of ATi and Nvidia so wait just a bit and you will get to snag a nice card, otherwise you will be getting yesterday's cards...

I wouldn't say you were "shortchanging yourself" by getting the 128 MB Asus 6800 GT. It's a relatively low priced card, with performance between the vanilla 6800 and a "real" 256 MB 6800 GT. I can't find another AGP card available on Newegg that can really compete with it, unless you have some suggestions.

You get what you pay for, but in this case, what you pay for is pretty damn good.

and how long are we talking?

EDIT: also, how much performance boost is there going to be?? NV50 was canned, and NV48 is going to have a PAPER LAUNCH in the summer, which probably means widespread availability in fall, which means it will be a christmas present for '05!!

I am leaning towards possibly the

BFG 6800 OC 128mb @ low end (350/700) = 276ish

BFG 6800 GT 256mb (375/1000) = 415ish and very few retailers with any in stock...takes some serious searching

Not much in the middle...

Back to this onchip encoder on the BFG models...Are they the only ones who carry it?? Is thi even functional in the drivers yet, or did I hear about this as being a waste???

6800GT PCI-E @ Chumbo for $400

You definitely want 256MB.
If you're careless with the options, you can experience impact from only 128MB already on 9800 and 5900 (and 6600!). At least with the latest games (FC and source) and above 1024X768.
When you want to put the performance of a 6800 card to good use, you're very likely to become limited by 128MB. So IMO, occurance of 128MB on 6800 & X800, is just as strange phenomenon as 256MB on 5200 & 9200.

My fav is the 6800GT. It's playing in roughly the same league as the ultra, but cheaper and cooler. The 6800 is not quite.

6800LE should be more like $151 than $251, so I assume that price includes a lot of onboard TV and Video stuff. LE is a downrated 6800. Not too shabby, but it's playing around down around the 6600 and 6600GT. I think it's slower than 6600GT most of the time, but how it performs in relation, depends on what is running.

The 6600s are nice cards, but I don't think you look quite like a 6600 customer 😉

I know nothing about "soft quadro".

Well the last highend card I bought (bought the same one in a AIW vairant) was the Radeon 9800PRO, realizing that it could use a performance boost, I've outfitted it with ramsinks and a Zalman cooler to overclock it (in sig). I thought it was stupid that I would buy a card thats faster but is only a year older so I then realized I should go with a card with 512MB ram (from 128). I think it's best to wait for at LEAST the first gen 512MB card but preferably a second gen card. So when ever the come out you just snag one (I will probably get a second gen 512MB card).

Little question for all of you guys, when do you think they will stop making highend cards for the AGP bus? I'm wondering if it will be this generation or 2 years from now (I really want to max out the AGP bus as much as possible).

Excuse me!!! I said I own ATI cards but I want this one to be an Nvidia card. Do you know anything about softquadro or performance of quadro cards in CAD apps...If not, then STFU!!!!! My bias or preference to get an Nvidia is solely on that premise. I love ATI cards. Think their DVD playback is better an dmy son's box I just revamped has an ATI and i thinkit looks great....Again STFU!!!
