There is a $30 rebate on the Asante FR34004LC DSL/Cabel router at http://www.asante.com/rebate_files/FR3004Rebate.pdf.

The FR3004LC includes a 4 port 10/100Mbps switch, 10Mbps WAN port, backup modem port, printer port, and firewall features. The backup modem port is kind of nice to have, as is the printer port.

Buy.com has it at "http://www.us.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10251006&loc=101" for $148.95. Add a little something and if you haven't already used it, use the $30 of $150 coupon to bring your cost down to about $110.

If you don't want to deal with the mail in rebate you can get it direct from Asante for a limited time at "http://www.asante.com/eweek/" for $125+$10 shipping. The rebate is already included.

Not a bad deal.

edit: Fixed bad link. Also it looks like this item is on back order at buy.com. The rebate is good through the end of the year though.

I believe the SMC Barricade and this one share the same inards. The specs are identical. I have the SMC and love it. I highly reccomend the Asante or SMC if you are in the market.

Well if you hate the blinking light, cover it like black electrical tape or something. :p

The SMC is a solid product if you can get over the light. I would cover it up with black tape but I used it all up to cover the VCR;)

what, you guys have your router next to your monitor or something? I put my on the floor where it belongs, and obviously I don't notice the light.

This is probably a stupid question but I haven't really done much research on routers before. It is my understanding that you can hook this up to your dsl connection(does it matter if you have the static ip account or dynamic ip account?) and then you can plug multiple computers into this router and they can all share the network connection. So this is an alternative to the crappy Windows 98 service pack II network sharing or building myself a little unix server. Will this work for all types of network programs I will want to run on both my computers (i.e. can we both play Quake III at the same time, ftp at the same time, Napster, etc.) or will there be restrictions. There is also a deal posted on the Linksys router right now. It seems to cost about the same thing, but from the comments in this thread it seems as if this one is superior. Is that true or are there positive and negative ascpects of each that I'm not seeing. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

stonythug yes, yes, yes (MUCH better than ICS), yes (not a whole comp needed), yes (Half-Life TFC too!.. ALL), and finally... I don't know about this Asante product, but if it is in fact the same hardware as the SMC Barracade router it is good. But, from my experience (had the Linksys and SMC) go with the SMC router. You will not be dissapointed.

Oh and the yeses above are in order respective to the proposed questions in your message.

I think I read somewhere that a firmware update will stop that annoying blinking light. I just don't remember where I saw it.
